my '84 T4wd daily driver is that color, and it too has no clear coat and the paint still looks good. think this and white were the only colors not to get that nasty clear coat.

Interesting, why put clear coat on most colors but not all?

The reason for the clear coat on other colors is uv light (darker colors fade out).
I can go inspect this car if someone is interested?
The price is to high i live in Reno and have never seen this car perhaps it's been tucked away in a garage somewhere. For that price it better be close to perfect!
I don't like to waste peoples time but i'm curious to see more of this car at that price.

I stand corrected:

I've been under the impression that this color only happened in 85 (same with the Toyota vans) but...if others have the color in 87 and 84...I've been wrong this whole time.

Awesome color IMHO all the same.

Feeling thankful I own one for only 2K and rust free.

The car looks plain white in the photo; is it not?
It would appear that the reason for the clear coat did not bear out in the real world - even in non-AZ / NM / SoCA environments, huh? Was this only a Toy problem?

I'm pretty sure it's that off white/yellow mix color that I never know the name of. It looks good on the T4wds though.

So, does gold - in Toyota Mothership-talk, topaz - have a clear coat?
I don't think I've ever heard anyone mention clearcoat peeling on topaz.

My totaled '88sr5 is white, and my '87 4wd dx is cream- def two different colors (neither has clear coat- thank goodness.) Don't recall any clear coat peeling on my late '84 Old Gold.

yes, the Topaz has clear coat, and if it was not garaged, it would peel off the roof and hood. particularly bad in dry southern states, I guess the UV breaks it down and it first turns whitish, and than blisters and starts peeling off. than the color fads real fast. It is not unique to toyota, I think many cars, both domestic and imported suffer the same fate.

the propensity to peel on the gold/topaz is one of the reason I hate that color so much. I have had lots of project Tercels this color (in fact more than any other color), it is not that the color is so bad looking (the last Tercel4wd I got from t4wdrules, and sold a good price, had almost perfect Topaz color, so must have been garaged most of its life). It looks so ugly when it peels and allows the color coat to oxidize, there is almost no way to make it look better short of stripping the paint off the whole car and than repainting it.

Well, I'm in STL and not AZ or NM, etc.
I can't speak for whether Goldie was garaged in Nashville for the first 19 years of her life, but I don't have a garage, so she's sat out for the 9 years I've had her. She has Southern exposure, so receives the full sun all year round.
There has never been a sign of peeling on her.
