$50. only took them 15 minutes so it seems steep to me. it's a 5 minute drive away so it's very convenient but i might try somewhere else next time.

Wow - does seem steep.
My local garage only charged me $25 to remove bearings and install new ones and retainers - both axles - in 2010 (I'd removed the old inner retainers already).
Note that the only work it's ever done for me is grind two sets of brake drums, these bearings, and the bi-annual safety checks on two vehicles (for which it makes a munificient $12). But then, it's no work for them, because they know both vehicles are kept in a safe and legal condition - really! - and just gives me wink-wink "inspections."

the local shop charges me 35.00 per one axle
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.
