My tercel always starts best when you give the gas a pump before turning the key. I think it's an old car thing in my case.
What I want to know is what causes dieseling, when the car tries to keep running after you turn it off. It seems to happen when my oil is getting low so my engine must be a bit hot. My car leaks a bit of oil. Probably burns a bit too, the occasional touch of exhaust smoke comes out the back. One time when it was dieseling for quite a few seconds, I put it in first to stop it and the car lurched backwards. So I'm wondering if dieseling is when your engine tries to run backwards?

when you turn key to on position (not start)

doesnt the fuel pump run until it builds pressure?

maybe the car will start right up if you turn it to ON for 20 seconds

I don't know- I can't hear it, but maybe. I'll give it a shot.

You can hear those Chevy fuel pumps though. It is that loud buzzing noise you hear before a Suburban or C/K or something starts, and you can hear it while it is running. It is so f****** annoying...

Pumping the gas gives the engine some fuel and closes the automatic choke. All carbureted engines should get at least one pump before starting them. Unless the engine's hot.

I've noticed the same thing about dieseling. Running backwards can't be good for the engine! Make sure your idle speed is correct and that you have good (NGK or ND) spark plugs in a cold heat range (maybe "6" for the NGKs). Running hot doesn't help either. Dieseling is when the fuel keeps burning after the ignition is off. Something is hot enough in your engine to ignite the mixture without spark plugs. By the way, 5th gear will lurch less. ;)

True for fuel injection, but it's more like 3 seconds than 20. These Tercels with their mechanical fuel pumps won't pump anything until the engine is turning over. But it doesn't really matter since there's more than enough fuel stored in the carb to start the engine.

Our fuel pumps are driven off the cam guys. Not an electric motor. I sometimes wish we had electric pumps, with the hope of less vapor-locking in mind.
Make sure your plugs are gapped right.
Check your coolant.
Check your oil.
Have your fuel/air mixture examined.
Examine your fuel lines and fuel filter for free flow. In case of lines, look under the car and look for rusty lines.
Clean the carb.
Drive longer distances. I live 12 miles from town. If I make that trip, no dieseling. If I make a 1 block distance, short bit of dieseling.
