My Tercel starts great when cold- turn the ignition to on for a millisecond and it will start, but when hot, I have to crank the engine and press the gas to start. Can I fix that or is that just a quirk of an older car?

Same with both my Tercels after a long run.
My first Tercel was better after I ran a carby kit through it though.
Sorry.. this doesn't really help much

Before the rebuild, it'd take 4tries of pumping on really chilled days. The other morning it was 50 degrees and a single pump, pre-cranking, and it fired right up. Its kind of hit or miss if it effortlessly starts when hot... Sometimes I'll crank it once, it'll stumble around 250 RPM for a couple secs, then idle right up. Other times I have to start cranking and tap it.
Look in the repair section for my SeaFoam treatment. Give it a shot.

....have a quote from somewhere saying that it is a leaking "power valve" in the carb that causes hard starting hot...or this CAN be the cause. If you see balck smoke when it starts...too rich...might confirm it...or if it starts better if you floor the gas pedal for more air.
Give a boy a gun-give a biatch a cell phone-and pretty soon you almost got yourself a police state.

Well, there is never any smoke coming out of the car... How would you replace the power valve?takza wrote: ....have a quote from somewhere saying that it is a leaking "power valve" in the carb that causes hard starting hot...or this CAN be the cause. i think theres great carb diagrams in there
how many miles on your carburetor? gas mileage? if thats the only problem i would hold off on a carburetor rebuild until it really needs it
but thats just me (them hoses are crazay...get a weber if you got the cash!)

Hows your air filter is 1 question.
How are your rubber fuel lines? Sometimes they can splinter off inside and clog things. Doubt thats whats going on if starting is the only problem.
I dunno if Charley rejetted my baby, but I also dunno if that was part of the issue?
Check your coolant, and have it powerflushed effectively.
Does it ever vaporlock? Mine still does minorly. I likely need my whole system flushed after I replace the heater core. I'd love to put an aluminum rad in, but that is not cheap.
How long do our pump impellers last?
I personally think that the carb and fuel pump need better cooling, until the last moment, where, apparently, heated fuel improves our economy. The real question is- to what point is heat helpful in our setups? At what point does gasoline deposit residues? Its necessary to have it warm enough to maintain atomization, but too hot and it'll toast the fuel and eat away at its effectiveness. The fact that our int and exg are intermeshed concerns me, heat-wise.
But thats a thing for a different inquirey.

Just replaced the air filter. I'll have to check the fuel lines, but they looked ok when I looked at the carb last. It does not vaporlock.Typrus wrote: Hows your air filter is 1 question.

I do bring another question- how long after you shut it off do you have to pump the gas- 15 minutes, a half hour, more?

15 minutes or less. But it typically takes 1 pump the rest of the time. Sometimes 2.
Hows your fuel filter doing?
