Go aftermarket gutter style racks, I've had the stock Toyota ones, and they're flimsy as hell.

This is mine. Yakima gutter clamps with custom cedar cross bars.

you can get a great deal on used Yakama or other similar high priced roof racks that use the older gutter mounts, none of the new cars have rain gutters. So people want to clear them out of their garage, closet,etc.
I have found them in Good Will stores, garage sales, or on craig's list for $10-$20. new they are many hundreds. I think the last one I bought with all kinds of attachments (for skis, bikes, etc) with the whole rack assemblies for $20.
Just make sure they adjust far enough down to fit the width of the rain gutters on the car (sometimes you can cut them down too).

So I just bought a set of roof racks and the towers are too short to reach the gutters... what did I do wrong? Are there taller towers? Ok update found out I need Yakima 1A towers for it to work...
