New member intro '86 SR5
Newbie to the Tercel here, just picked up a '86 4wd SR5. This is my first Tercel but I've had a bunch of 4wd Toyota's over the years. Mostly LandCruiser's and a few pickups. Really excited about the Tercel, has a good maintenance history and mostly unmolested. Interior is pretty clean and all there, has typical rust with some poor repairs that I will have to address. Has 223000 miles, standard transmission. Ive read the FAQ a few times and got some good info so far. Any additional insight and opinions are really appreciated.

Thanks a bunch!! It's a little rougher in person but better than the others I looked at. It did come with literally a pickup bed full of extra parts some used but mostly new, even the original wheels with a great set of tires on them.BaileySims wrote:That thing is super clean. Great find!

CLEAN!!! the paint looks awesome
Re: New member intro '86 SR5
Thanks! Got my license plate and got to drive her a little this evening before she starts seeing commuter duty in the morning. I gotta say it's really a blast to drive. Seems to be pretty solid. I feel a little pulsing somewhere in the brakes but stops good. The PO did disclose that it would occasionally pop out of 2nd on a downshift but as long as you had your hand on the shifter it wouldn't, it did pop out once when I didn't have my hand on it during a 20 minute drive of mixed in town and highway driving. I'm sure I will have to address this at some point.LOSTFISH wrote:CLEAN!!! the paint looks awesome
It does use oil but produces no smoke, the PO said that he had been running Mobil 1 synthetic in it since he bought it 3 years ago. I know sometimes switching to synthetic on a higher mileage motor can sometimes lead to increased oil consumption so I plan to switch back to conventional and see if that helps.

Also I scavenged a set of Yakima towers and load bars of a previous LandCruiser I owned and cut the bars to fit and installed them today. Will get some more pics tomorrow in the day light.

Gorgeous Terc, dude!
Re: New member intro '86 SR5
Had some Yakima gutter towers and load bars left over from my old green 80. Cut the load bars down and installed them on the Tercel. Trying to upload some pics but it won't let me right now?

My old 84 used a quart of oil every 100 miles and didn't smoke at all. Didn't matter what oil I used and I tried them ALL.
Try the 50/50 flush for your transmission: Drain it, fill it with 50/50 cheap gear lube and ATF. Be easy on it, but get it hot, at highway speeds, for 50+ miles. Drain it all. If it looks dirty do it again! Then fill with good gear lube.

Re: New member intro '86 SR5
welcome to the forum!
looks like a very nice buy. usually the popping out of gear means the main shaft bearings are worn and sloppy, and it allows the gear cluster to shift forward and aft when you accelerate/decelerate, and it is enough moment to cause it to shift out of gear.
It should be addressed soon if the flush and refill does not help. If it continues to wear something will eventually fail and cause the transmission to bundle up, right now it can be fixed. Replacing the main bearings and seals is not too difficult (though you have to pull and tear down the transmission). if you bundle it up it can not be rebuilt, most of it becomes scrap. so go easy on the transmission until you find a good replacement, or get a chance to replace the main bearings. You can install a new clutch and rear main seal while you have the trans out it too.
We visited N. Carolina several years ago, had a good time. We want to take another road trip through the area sometime, and try and go all the way to Maine. Perhaps we can drop by for a visit. We just got back from driving to Boston. We always have a good time on our road trips.
