so after i put in the new halfshafts front axles, my friend and i drained the transmission fluid and filled it back up with 4.1 qts

but he thinks he messed with the wrong bolts under there or something

for a week it was hard to get into reverse
then for a few days it would only go into reverse after the car was started up and driven for a few minutes

now it wont go into reverse at all or if it does its very rare
anyways this morning i tried to go to work but it was shifting so roughly into 2nd and 3rd i deemed it unsafe (for the car)

any ideas? where are the shift adjustment bolts located? did i do any permanent damage to my transmission?

thanks

where do you live? If you live in southern Maine, New Hampshire, and eastern Massachusetts, go here: http://www.atlantictransmission.com/. Tell me, first, where you live, then I can help you out better.

Do you know what bolts? If something came loose inside, it might not be as easy as tightening the bolts again.

there is a bolt up near the front of tranny that he thought was a fill plug
he pulled that out, and also pulled out the rear drain plug (they look the same according to him except one is longer and has a spade cut or something on the inside end)

he says he could have mixed them up but he figured since you need to back out the drain plug to get oil into the different compartments that the spade cut one allowed oil to pass through... plus the other bolt is longer

so i dont know, should we try just adding more oil? and messing with that bolt? (taking it out, trying to shfit etc) thanks guys

there are 2 transmission drain plugs, and on mine they were exactly the same, both had magnets on the inside to catch the metal shavings. I don't remember seeing any other nuts on the bottom of the trans when I changed my oil, but I could be wrong.

do you have the online pdf manual for the tercel? it has diagrams of the whole transmission, so you can figure out which bolt you might have pulled.

There are 3 drain plugs...the one at the back only drains about a pint though. Probably took out a bolt that positions a trans shaft or shifter?

NOT a good idea to just randomly remove bolts....

chiltons car manual has really bad B&W pictures that dont help much, so we kind of had to decide for ourselves which ones were the fill bolts

i have a broken tranny in my shop
if you describe the locations of the bolts you removed i'll
pull them tonite and let you know what i find out

he had accidentally switched the rear drain plug, and the bolt right under the shift lever housing

had to remove both bolts completely, replace rear drain plug (the long ass bolt)

shift car into 1st gear, take clutch out, then tighten bolt under shift lever housing (driver side of tranny) all the way down

the bolt for the shift lever housing has threads at the bottom, but the majority of its length is smoother and skinnier

thank god i can shift now though
