What a waste
Well, dealership turns back the exact f'ing thing I suspected. Carb dumping excess fuel, improper atomization. Whoopdee goddamn friggin doo. Well, they jack the diagnostics price up to $85.50 from the initial quote of no more than $42.50 for diagnosis JUST TO TELL ME WHAT I KNEW. And now my parents are pissed accusing me I only want to take all their money.
$520 part and labor.
Man, I don't know what to do. Now mom's threatening to not even pay the diagnosis that she told me to go do purely because apparently I am a money-sapping ungrateful idiot.
Sorry for the angry tone but I can't deal with this right now. I'll let you all know how everything turns out.

There is an excellent independent Toyota mechanic in Boulder; he just rebuilt a
carb for me last fall and did an excellent job. Before you spend any money why
don't you call him and talk?
Many of us Tercel owners rely on Charley to do the major repair on the little
cars,
Good luck!

I'll have to check him out for future projects. We paid the $520 for the rebuild. The parts are on order, tracking says they will be here anywhere from tomarrow to Thursday.
I called the parts department today... There are 2 rear coil springs for our car left in the entire USA. One in Boston and one is California. The guy says he'd be worried that one or both of them were not there, so thats edgy. I checked also with my local Springs shop and they said, and I quote, "There's not a damned hope for coil springs. Nope, no way you can reshape them." Thats encouraging. Maybe I just need to throw some leaf springs on there >.<
Does anyone know of any place that sells LIFT springs that might fit ours? I don't want DROP springs.
--------------
You know what? I hate/love you hber.... $280 for a carb overhaul with Charlie. I spoke with him for about 10 minutes, he says he's got three "Terk 4-by's" in his shop right now. Thank God somebody is making a strong effort to save these things.
He says he does everything but body and paint. Too bad, I was gonna ask him if he could quote me on The Blue (my 86)
So would you suggest him for wheel bearings, CV's, springs, etc?

Addition:
I got a rebuilt carb for $90 and it ran right when it first started up and then the idle was screwed up and it has been like that ever since. Another time we had the carb rebuilt from the other engine my '83 had and that one ran great, I guess it's just a matter of where you go.
As for picking out Tercel 4WDs out of junkyards they will make sure you reconsider. One junkyard I called said that they would sell me a Tercel from $700 up and for each car that is in front of the car I am to buy they will charge me $100 per car for the forklift to move it. So, if I find a pretty much complete Tercel and there are 10 cars ahead to get it out, then that would cost me a $1000 plus the cost of the car. Arrgh! Junkyards... still trying to squeeze the last penny for everything they do. And all of the junkards I called had "No Exceptions", that you have to be over 18. Pick-a-Part said that they don't "card hard" so that might be a chance. Pick-your-Parts says you have to be 17 and be with an adult at all times. What? Are they afraid a car is going to fall on top of you?
Sorry for the long comment. Wish you good luck. Tercel parts are starting to get scarce. What did you do about your bad distributor vacuum advance?

THANK YOU HBER!
I just canceled with the Stealership (they said they were going to order the parts in a few hours but since they hadn't it was cool to cancel)
So I now went from $520 quote to
$280-$300 quote!! Either way, over a $200 savings!
Now I just have to A) Figure out how to get there and B) Not get killed in Boulder
Hope my baby can make the journey down the Diagonal... Pray for me folks!

Typrus, while you are in Boulder, check with Blake’s junk yard in Superior. They had a lot of Tercel parts when I lived in Boulder. Another place in boulder that worked on my Tercel for a reasonable price was Independent Nissan now called I think Independent Motors, out on 4th avenue west, towards the canyon. Also you can by rebuilt carbs on the internet, some from very reputable places. Some of these places rebuild zillions of carbs in nice clean facilities with lots of parts so some produce a nice product. I bought mine for $145 and I works great.

Didn't your parents want you to take it to the dealer in the first place? If they really charged you more than they quoted, you can dispute it. You have to agree to a price unless you're going by time and materials in which case you know there's a risk involved. I'd suggest rebuilding it rather than paying all that money.
I canceled with the Stealers.
I want to be able to try rebuilding on something I don't need for reliable transportation before I try on a DD. I am eager to give it a shot, but at the same time I'm worried about screwing it up.
I'm still trying desperatly to get SOMEONE to hire me... So right now I'm running on borrowed money.
I would just get a Weber if it were up to me, but its not.
I'd rather have an expert rebuild and reinstal at this time versus my amateur butt.
Once some moolah starts flowing, I'll toy around with our 81 Yamaha motorcycles carbs along with the one off the dead engine.
We did try to argue that they told me it was going to be $42.50 but they said it took longer than a standard diagnosis. He mentiopned hooking it up to a variety of machines and all that to get the same result I had been suspecting based on everyone here's input. Just not worth it to me.
I still have to get that vibration figured out, though I'm quite sure part of it is in the alignment.

I got a quote of $150 for a rebuild job and thought that was bad. I have a NAPA rebuild kit & float that I paid $60 for.Typrus wrote: You know what? I hate/love you hber.... $280 for a carb overhaul with Charlie.
If you can change out an engine...you can redo the carb...it's just smaller. Pull it off of there and setup a table in a clean garage with ventilation...good light...and label all parts...put them in baggies as you go. Follow the instructions......
Give a boy a gun-give a biatch a cell phone-and pretty soon you almost got yourself a police state.

Ah, Independent Motors is a bit on the pricey side, and I cannot complain about the quality of the work. But--not on carbs. When I needed the carb rebuilt on the 87, I actually called them first; IM said they "no longer work on carburetors". I was shocked! This was only last fall.
Charley's is the last mechanic in Boulder that will work on Toyota carbs; he does really great work! My 87 would not pass Colorado emissions until he rebuilt it, a stellar job. Even re-jetted the thing.
As far as Blakes goes, it is always worth the drive! Blakes is the "elephant grave yard" of foreign cars. Everything is neatly stacked/ organized--this is not your ordinary junkyard... Small parts are stored in old VW bus bodies, lined up like elephants in the Tarzan movies.
I got a radiator out there a couple of years ago. now I keep my own 86 wagon as a parts vehicle, so I don't go out there anymore.
Are Canadian and Australian carburetors easier to work on>mechanics here dread working on them, since it is so critical for emissions testing.

My Terc is sitting in his parking lot next to a creamy-blue colored 85.
He said it should be done tomarrow.
He's going to check out the braking situation among other things.
I hope it all works out. I have this grand dream of driving away in some luxury (to me) vehicle. Every place I've brought the engine said the carb was crap but everything else about the engine seemed above par, so hopefully this will work out nicely.

Independent motors, Blakes, man I miss Colorado. Yes, Blakes is defiantly worth the trip. If They keep building new houses out there, it will eventually be gone
. The parts are neatly labeled and separated in the VW busses! There was a big tub of carbs that were not worth rebuilding but I picked through them to find a non-leaking two stage vacuum advance! One might be able to call Blakes from out of town and have the part shipped- not sure though. BTY I might even send my carb to Charley for a rebuild in the next year or so!
