Manual Steering Rack
Does anyone have a manual steering rack they want to get rid of? It's for my buddies 87 wagon that has power steering and he was also wondering if the manual rack will bolt in place of the power steering one?
Re: Manual Steering Rack
Think you're gonna need the steering input shaft and (at least one) rack mount bushing and bracket.
if it aint there, there's a good chance it won't break!

Re: Manual Steering Rack
you can de-power a power steering system. that way you don't have to bother with replacing anything else. to de-power it, you have to remove the rack from the housing and cut off the seal in the middle that allows the fluid to assist with pushing the rack either direction. then you have to remove the fluid lines and plug them so the housing is sealed.
apparently a lot of honda guys do this so you can look up "convert power steering to manual" and should find some guides that will mostly apply to you. i would like to do it to my corolla eventually.

Re: Manual Steering Rack
Well, we're thinking the rack needs replaced, I haven't looked at it, but I was told that the rack has a lot of play in it. The tie rod inners and outers were just replaced, so I was thinking that the rack was the only other thing that would cause play in the steering. If that makes sense haha. So we were just gonna replace it with a manual rack just for less issues down the road, but if its easier just to replace it with a power rack then we may just do that....

Re: Manual Steering Rack
how about the steering "u" joint for causing play?
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

Re: Manual Steering Rack
if you're gonna buy a replacement rack, RockAuto.com has a selection of remanufactured units at "decent" prices... but shipping might be kinda high
