I have removed them before without damage. I do not remember how it comes off, but I think I remember it just pops off like a door panel. carefully pry it off from the edges with a flat tool like a putty knife, as I recall. the head liner comes off by pulling the edge trim off the edges of the opening and than you an pull down the head liner to get at the screws that hold the assembly in place.
One of my project tercels had a non-closing sunroof, and I completely dismantled it to fix it. Once I got the assembly out of the car, I drilled out the rivets to open up the drive mechanism to fix it, used pop rivets to put the housing back together. it worked perfectly once I had it installed and you could not tell that I had it all apart.
there are some details on how to dismantle the sun roof in the FSF, with some "exploded views" that indicates where all of the fasteners are on the assembly. It is not that bad a job, once you know the sequence to remove all the parts, I studied it carefully in the car before I started pulling and prying on it. What at first looks impossible is not so bad once you figure out the sequence of how it goes in. After all, it had to be installed somehow in the factory; once you determine that, the removal procedure becomes more obvious. Studying the diagram in the FSM is a big help.

Re: Sun or is it Moon roof ?
The fabric cover on mine had push clips on the forward edge I used a clip remover on these and then was able to slide it out of the grooves it rides in. I did have to flex it slightly fortunately mine still has some give.
