Transmission Cost?
Howdy y'all!
I'm not in need of a transmission overhaul at the moment, but this question is more out of curiosity. How much does a transmission cost + labor?
I guess to continue on with some general repair questions...
I'm not a mechanic at all, but my front end suspension needs some adjustments. It pulls to the left. I would do the work myself, which would be really cheap, but I can't. I took it to Angler's, and they quoted a price of $1500...does that seem too much?

Re: Transmission Cost?
A friend removed the tranny himself and took it to tranny shop
1200.00 is what they charged and he supplied them with the replacement parts
The tranny broke a month later
He pulled it again and took it back
They fixed it again for nothing

Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

Re: Transmission Cost?
that sounds like way too much for front end work to me, by about double. need a complete list of what was required. May not need that much in reality, but often shops will replace tie-rod ends on both sides even if only one is worn out.
if you bite the bullet and determined to fix it yourself, you can likely get all the parts you need, and the tools, for about $300. and get it done in a weekend. you can rent the larger, and less commonly used tools.

Re: Transmission Cost?
I was actually thinking of just getting the parts and replacing them myself...finding free time is always the hard part.
Am I able to replace the front struts without removing the coil springs?

At the risk of sounding sarcastic if you dont know how to change a strut insert don't mess with it you could get hurt BAD!!mrmora wrote:

Yes you need to (undo) the spring. Now if your changing the entire strut that's easy unfortunately entire new strut's are unavailable.

Re: Transmission Cost?
actually you can remove the front strut assembly without any special tools, and than take the assembly it to a shop. And pay them use their spring compressor and replace the inserts for you. that will save about 60 percent of the labor costs. if you leave the lower steering knuckle on the end of the strut assembly, the alignment will not be affected. It is a straight forward remove and replacment, worst part would be getting the large axle nut off (a big socket, breaker bar with a "cheater" pipe extension usually does it).

Re: Transmission Cost?
The alignment is affected, but only the camber. If you mark the concentric washer on the top bolt of the strut to knuckle mount, then you cn put it back in its exact place and alignment will not change. No need to remove the axle nut just to remove the strut.
In the repair guides, there are a few good write up with pictures. This is not a straight forward replacement as he original struts are not available. You need to disassemble the strut, pull the guts out and replace them with a cartridge. The KYB cartridge fits perfectly.
The upper strut mounts are likely to come out in pieces so be prepared to replace them as well.
