I made a hitch with just a heavy piece of angle iron that I bolted to the rear tie down lugs, than mounted the actual hitch in the middle. I used it to flat tow an 1800 lb car (a first gen honda CRX) about 400 miles. Though I would not recommend that much tow weight, I had to move my daughter's car with a blown engine half way across Texas. I was very careful with accelerations and slowing down.
If you have access to a welder you can fabricate a mount, even one that bolts up so you can remove it latter. I have seen one for the tercel that bolts to the bottom of the rear bumper, and had a tang that went under the car and also bolted to the bottle of the spare tire well. So the load was spread to both the lower pan of the car, and the rear bumper.
Either case, I would not tow anything very heavy with the tercel, the brakes are too light, and you risk damaging your clutch and transmission. Do it carefully, and install my brake up grade over in the repair guides section, and keep the tow weight low, it will work fine.
I was just wanting to get a small trailer to bring a bunch of wood to my house so my wife can finish building the kitchen. I know no one with a truck around here. Been meaning to look into that brake upgrade as well, but my rims might permit me from doing so. I was just trying to get something easy that'll bolt up. I still don't trust my welding skills nor can I measure and cut anything correctly. :/
