periodic stalling when slowing down

Post by jerand9505 »

hey there, first off this is a wonderful source of information and a great community of people. i have been sideline lurking forever but as of yesterday i am the proud owner of an 83 wagon, 4wd, m/t. rebuilt motor, new tires, alternator, fuel pump, belts. got it for $1500 8)

the only issue i know of is that the low fuel light constantly stays on, and the motor stalls when slowing down. the guy claimed it happened to him once and it happened once to me as well. i'm happy to throw a little money at the problem, i just can't find info on what it could be. fuel sending unit? tank screen? the low fuel light is a telltale sign something is wrong, obviously. i need to get it from greenville, sc to raleigh, nc next week and i'd like to get the problem solved before that.

thanks, jeremy

Welcome! The following comes to mind: vacuum leak, Idle too low, fuel filter clogged, throttle positioner not working right, fuel cut solenoid not hooked up right

The low fuel light is not related in any way to your issue. That is some sort of sensor in the tank, which just lights the bulb up.

welcome to the forum,

check your float level, though the glass window on the front of the carb (likely will need to be cleaned off). also, the device that delays the throttle closing too fast on the front side of the carb on the throttle shaft, might be out of adjustment. It is an easy adjusment, this happened to me, went a way after I adjusted it.

The Throttle Positioner (TP) for the record.

If you are sitting still, idling, does applying the brake pedal have a significant effect on idle? Think vacuum brake booster system.

it's covered in the FSM, in the emission control section.
