Hello, Tercel 4WD lovers, greetings from Costa Rica.
I have a problem with my gearbox, using first gear on a slope, throws the first of back to neutral.
If anyone knows how to fix appreciate the information you can give me.
Problems with my gearbox.

Re: Problems with my gearbox.
i'm afraid something isn't translating right. it sounds like your first gear doesn't work, or doesn't work on steep hills?
i'm not sure what you are saying about the "the EL 4WD and highway" -- i know you're talking about the extra low gear but i don't know what you're trying to say about it.
from what i can gather, i'm guessing either your first gear is trashed or your clutch needs to be replaced, but if you can explain your problem more clearly that would be a big help.

Yeah that's right,
What I mean is that when the first steep climb speed is used, the throws back to neutral.

ok, getting closer.
do you mean it pops out of 1st gear or out of EL? does this only happen on steep hills or does it happen any time you use that gear?

Re: Problems with my gearbox.
sounds like it is popping out of first gear. This is a common problem when the main shaft bearings get worn and sloppy. the mail shaft can shift forward far enough to cause it to pop out of gear. This is because the bearings are worn and allow too much play.
some people keep driving it that way and either just hold it in gear or even put a shock cord on the lever to hold it in place. if you keep driving it you could trash the whole transmission and if that happens it can not be fixed. You either need to find another transmission, or pull your trans, have it pulled apart and cleaned, than have the bearings and seals replaced (this is a major operation and not really a job most people can do themselves).
One thing you might do right now is change the gear oil in the transmission and front diff, use a 50/50 mixture of ATF and gear oil, drive it lightly for few days and than drain it out, replace with the proper heavy gear oil. sometimes the ATF flush helps, but at least you will clean out metal particles and perhaps not cause any more damage to it until you can get new bearings to replace them later.
Good luck.

Re: Problems with my gearbox.
per what Petros stated it would be the bearing on the front end of the main output shaft and that bearing is available
i have some good used ones
25BCS44JN NACHI N/O and/or B25-145 NSK. Toyota part No. 90363-25015 & 16
the problem could also be caused by bad mesh teeth on first gear, these are the teeth that connect gear to coupling (aka slider) that shift fork moves to engage the gear. ( i have some used 1st gears)
no matter which it is, the tranny needs to be taken apart

Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

Re: Problems with my gearbox.
The information provided for Petros this good, this problem the had consulted with my mechanic and told me I could be the washer synchronization of first gear, this problem of gearbox could be solved more simply changing the whole gearbox replacing the short piece, because in some cases the problem may persist.
