You know the strangest thing happened today....

Post by gnarnold »

Well check this out ,I was doing the daily feed and burp my beast this morning and I noticed that there was a gap in between the timing belt cover and the engine. Upon close inspection it seems that the rubber seal got sucked into the actual belt and shredded the cover seal .in the process shredded the timing belt itself .
Now here's where my threshold for leaning over that car was pushed to the limit.
When this happened I was at my storage unit .so anti freeze all over the place to take radiator out was not and option.I found that you can pull the rad out (full of coolant)pretty far .far enough to get trying to get the crank pulley off by force ,by power of suggestion ,and being that the sun goes down at 3;30 ,pm here ,by the power of pen light.
A few busted knuckles a scared and frightened storage unit neighbor. Rented a puller.now as I tried to get it back on by force! begging ,pleading etc.it won't sit all the way down bang chip bang curse swear wrenches flying .I don't want to chip anymore of the wheel besides a wood block what's a good way to get it to seat right
I used to laugh at the man with a pinto  , until I became a humble servicer of a tercel :|

Remove the pulley again, check for burrs, corrosion etc. Clean crankshaft pulley and mating surface with a piece of fine emery cloth. Put a small amount of grease on it to help it slide on better. Also check that the pulley key isn't damaged, out of place etc. Good luck.

Well after a ton of feeling and missing I went with what I thought was the right spot and threw the bolt in and started tightening .I thought I stripped the bolt ,but to my relief it was the dopplegagger fitting in the doo hickey .seems to be fine except for the rattle from the exhaust or something tje vibrates and annoys the hell out of me. I tightened some hose clamps to snug it up. then the drive line /by the carrier bearing started rubbing aginst the exhaust pipe ,so I shoved a piece of hard rubber in between the under carriage and the exhaus pipe no noise for now.any idea's for a permanent fix?

gnarnold,

I am sorry you are having a rough day, but appreciate your sharing. I must be a little tired, as I haven't laughed that hard in a long time, "beat this car to the width of a sheet of paper". Hang in there friend, I'm hoping to join the club soon. When things get real bad, I'll call it a day and try again the next chance I get. It hasn't failed me yet.

Take it to an exhaust shop and get some hangers added, maybe. Should be between $20-40. Some guys will do it for free if you go to them pretty often (I have been changing the exhaust on my Pontiac Vibe/Toyota Matrix a lot looking for that sweet sound).
But...did you try hitting it with a hammer?

I like your quote I often fantasize about me and a 8 lb sledge hammer on a nice summer day just me and my tercel and that hammer .makes me feel all warm and tingly just thinking about that first carefully placed hit......

This was exactly the feeling I had with the Vibe recently when I was having an electrical problem that turned out to be multiple broken grounds on the engine head. I couldn't get a set of diagrams to print, I kept having to go back and forth across my parents' stupid oversized house to check diagrams, I pulled the dash to better access wires, it was getting too dark to work at 4pm, it was cold...I ended up kicking the front bumper where I wouldn't hurt it pretty savagely a few times at the end of one night.

Anyway, the grounds were broken because when I reinstalled the engine I forgot to reposition them to not have strain on them after the first test start and run.

You can probably also "modify" the part of the exhaust that's rubbing with a sledge hammer so that it has a nice little contour to clear the carrier. You won't want that carrier to get hot. Let me tell you, those are ...very annoying when they go, and they cost a lot to boot. And they look fun to actually remove from the DS.
