Water Pump Sump cover?

Post by speedy »

Hi,

Newbi to the forum! Long time Tercel Wagon lover. had one growing up and just purchased my very own.

After cleaning out the mouse nest from the blower fan, and cleaning all vents I moved on to the thermostat for a warm winter ride.

Rookie mistake, swapping out the thermostat...over tightened the nuts and broke the water pump suction cover ?!?! (cover that waterpump bolts to)

I can't seem to locate this cover anywhere...does anyone perhaps have one, or know of one.

I'm hoping i'm not the first rookie to do this.

Cheers!

Do you mean the cover the lower hose hooks to or the water pump housing (the part the water pump actually bolts to?)
if it aint there, there's a good chance it won't break!

The part the water pump and thermostat housing bolt to, It was the thermostat mounting stud that I foolishly broke.

since you will have to remove it anyway maybe you could drill out the center of the stud and tap a screw driver into the hole and maybee unscrew it out of there.
if that does not work drill out stud and retap for new stud
use new or very sharp drill bits
if that does not work i should have that part but would not be able to ship it till monday or tues
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

Thanks!

Unfortunately the stud broke out of the housing....which is why I need the housing. This will teach me to use my torque wrench.

Where are you located?

Cheers!

good rule of thumb: small nuts and bolts get small torque. using 1/4" drive socket wrenches for the little guys helps with this.

welcome to the forum!

sorry to hear about your troubles, these 10mm nuts only need like 1-2 foot lbs (14 inch-pounds if I recall). this is just past hand tight. that is the back up housing that the water pump bolts to.

That is a stud that is easy enough to replace from the housing. You will have to remove it and soak the broken off stud in ATF or penetrating oil (ATF works better), heat the housing up with a heat gun, and you may be able to get the broken end to back out. Cutting a flat in it so you can get a screw driver on it would be good. they make a tool called an "easy-out" where you drill a small hole in the stud end and drive it in to extract it.

If you can not get it out, your local auto parts store usually has easy-outs. Or, take the part in and show them (particularly if they have a machine shop like most NAPA stores). They may get it out for you and sell you a new stud for a few $. Also, when you get the new stud you should also replace the o-rings, there are three (two small ones on the by pass tube and a large one on the font of the engine block). Take those in and have them match them, also very inexpensive. IT may leak after you break the seal if the o-rings are old and brittle, so get new ones so yo do not have to do it over again. If they are soft and pliable, they can be reused. Not likely on a car this old however.

Good luck.

Huge thank you to Foryst for hooking up the water pump, suction cover assembly.

New O rings at NAPA and the Tercel is back in business with a heater that works better than ever!!!

Lesson has been learned, no more over torquing of bolts

Cheers

If anyone else splits one of these, try and find an experienced welder. I got a classmate to fix a supercharger bracket. As long as the part is welded straight on the break and cleaned up well, it should be ok.
But...did you try hitting it with a hammer?
