Yeah, I figured about the little locking clip. I am apparently missing both, because I can slip the inboard side in and out of the differential for about a centimeter. I don't think it's the differential itself, as there is no noise and it hasn't been in 4WD at all since we've had it.
But...did you try hitting it with a hammer?

i have found that all axles have a small amount of side to side play at the diff. the clip keeps it from sliding out but it's not a precise fit. i've never found it to be a problem.

Ditto just becaust their is a little play in the axle does not mean that the spider gear inside the diff is loose

A centimeter seems like a little more than some side to side play though. That's a lot isn't it?

the axle stub is designed to have some in and out movement on the spline to prevent binding of the CV joint (which also has some in and out play as well), as the wheel goes up and down (the axle length changes slightly). this is normal. If the spider gears moved in and out that much it means the diff is trashed and you could not drive it.

If mine don't seem to do that is it a problem? Both are in with a solid click and the stubs don't move at all. The joint will move a bit but not the ends.

you are fine, it just means you can not push on it hard enough to over come the pressure from the spring clip.

Btw, the original noise I had never fully went away. I thought I had it licked when I changed out the drivers side cv axle but it started coming back with increasing regularity and severity so I decided to chase it down today. The solution to this was the inner tie rods. Changed them out and the front end feels and sounds like a new car. Well, a crappy new car. But a new car nonetheless!!

what did you use for a wrench on the inner tie rods? i had to grind down the jaws of a big crescent wrench to make them thin enough to fit.
