You can get a stick like a hammer or broom handle hold it to the fuel pump then put your ear on the other end of the stick.
If its the fuel pump the sound will be more pronounced if it's not the fuel pump move the stick around to different spots on the engine and find the where the noise coming from

Heh well I added a sound clip sans video so you wouldn't even have to look at another running, theres a picture of a tasty chanterelle instead.

Just as a follow up for anybody that reads this thread in the future, I pulled the harmonic balancer off and only then realized that the notch on the front of the pulley doesn't line up with the small notch on the back of it that's shown in the FSM and that I couldn't actually see when it was in the car. The back notch lines right up with the TDC mark I made. Woops! I guess I just assumed the front one would be lined up. Thanks for the help everyone!

I don't think mine has a front notch. Maybe yours just got dinged at some point?

No, its a long uniform v-shaped notch/groove in the front face of the pulley from the center to the edge that definitely looks machined. I thought surely it would correspond w/ TDC, it's a lot easier to see but is about 10* off.

Yeah, none of mine I've ever seen have a notch in the front face of the pulley, only the rear notch that lines up with the timing guide on the timing belt cover.

Which is the front? The rear one looks like a chip

The front is facing forward, the rear one by my finger is the correct TDC mark.

If I had to guess, the pulley looks backwards (if that is even possible, it's been a while)

is that notch on the front of the pulley the one that had you messed up, or is that the mark you added? it looks really close the the original TDC notch so i'm guessing it's the one you added. i want to see the bad mark that had you messed up.

The notch on the front is the one that had me messed up. My new mark is just a little white dab of paint to the left of it where TDC looked to be when I lined up the crank gear and the mark on the block (I cleaned the engine bay recently and its a little hard to see, and there is still white paint on the front 'bad' notch from my first attempt). I couldn't even see the rear notch behind the lower cover until I pulled the pulley off and looked at it, but it's pretty much exactly lined up with my TDC paint mark. That rear notch looks like the one in the FSM, and the one on the front has to be a good 10* off.

When I have the front pulley off I make the notch larger, and put in a matching one on the outer side of the pulley, and tyically ad a dab of paint if some is handy. The stupid timing marker on the plastic front cover always blocks the rear notch, so having a mirror one on the front edge makes setting the timing much easier.
