Hello All, my daughter has a 1985 T4WD (as do I) but she lives in Washington state and I live in Rhode Island… I just got a call and the shop where her car was towed just told her that the problem she suffered is that the transmission drive shaft is completely stripped and she needs a new transmission. They found one in Denver for $1200 not counting shipping or installation. Ouch! Does anybody know of where we could find a transmission closer to her? It may be the end of the line for her trusty car but I thought I should check here before throwing in the towel.
Thanks in advance,
Help: daughter lost transmission

a little more info: just got off the phone with the mechanic in Washington and he said it is NOT just the input shaft but that the internal gears are stripped out too so that she needs a complete transmission.

that is too much for a trans, you should be able to get one delivered for about $450 or less, if you can find one.
where does she live, I may have a used one that is good. I have a number I have been stock piling in my garage so I can keep driving my Tercel4wd indefinitely. I got them from wrecking yards, and other non-running cars, so I do not know how good they are, they are either good, or for use as parts to rebuild other ones. I may have one I can spare, the input shaft turns smooth, and the out put turns, and it shifts though all the gears. But that does not mean it is good. only way to know is to put it in and drive it. There might be someone from the Tercel4wd forum that can do the trans swap.
Forum member Xirdneh also has a stock pile of good trans, and some he has done an excellent job and rebuilt for a reasonable price. He is on the west side of Puget Sound.

interesting, they are an importing company, they usually get low miles trans from Japan. could be a great buy, but some of these companies are less than reputable (so check these guys out for complaints on web pages). If they have a good trans for you, it would be an excellent price.
No way of knowing what final gear ratio it has since it is imported, you may have to swap out the front diff (you can pull the front cover and count the teeth to verify if it the same front ring and pinion ratio as the one you are replacing). if the front ring and pinion ratio is the same, keep it since it will have much less miles on it. This one has a push button 4wd set up, using that vac operated diaphragm and pushrod to shift it into 4wd, should be an easy thing to remove and use the USDM shift lever for 4wd.
If they do indeed have good condition low mileage trans, it would be good for at least 200k miles if gear lube changes are done regularly. that price is cheaper than a rebuild kit alone. Even if you could find a kit, a rebuilt trans would cost you about $1000, not counting installation and shipping.

Re: Help: daughter lost transmission
Petros, thanks for the replies. My daughter lives in Leavenworth but the car broke down while she was visiting relatives in Ellensburg (and is sitting there now while we try to figure out what to do next). She is traveling and won't be back in WA for a week. Xirdneh replied to a post of mine in a different thread and said he didn't have any suitable trannys.

Re: Help: daughter lost transmission
if just the tranny is swapped (keep old differential aka transaxle housing ) you do not have to worry about different differential gear ratios
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

Re: Help: daughter lost transmission
Well, she has listed the car on this board (to scrap it). I sent some PMs to people that responded but have never heard back from anyone and I think she just decided it was time to move on. I don't think she has had any responses (to the for sale ad) but, seriously, there are a lot of nice bits still on that car...
