Hello,

I have recently found a gem of a Tercel. It is an 1985 4wd complete with plaid seats and all the other awesome features. This same model/year was the first car I ever drove 15 years ago when I got my drivers licence. My brother eventually put an end to the original Tercel with some epic 4x4 adventures.

Car with 270,000 kms, engine in good shape but with a broken front sway bar.

I am located up in Whitehorse Yukon (Northern Canada) and am trying to track down a part. If there is anyone in Canada who has ideas let me know. If not I could also have the part shipped to Alaska and I can go pick it up there as we don't live too far.

Thanks,

I intend to do the barto lift and use this as my little bush buggy. Pretty excited but have to figure out this part as I am unable to find one in the Yukon at this time.

Let me know what you think. Thanks in advance,

Andrew

if you cannot find one in canada
i have one in washington
might cost a bit to ship it
in the states shipping was 41.00 from washington to michigan
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

welcome to the forum, north. there are a few other members in the yukon and alaska.try using the search function here on the forum for 'yukon' to find their posts, then message them. i think member 'north of 64' or something like that might have a parts car.

all second gen 2wd tercels (wagons from 83-88 and hatchbacks from 83-86) use the same front end so you can get a sway bar from any of those, too.

finding stuff locally will save you a hell of a lot on shipping. the cost of US/canada shipping is ridiculous.

I have one to but the freight would be even higher the further south it gets :oldgeek:

Pretty sure northof64 has two cars. One winter and one summer car. Not sure about a parts car. I have a few kicking around but they are rusted and necked at the critical place where they break. There are cars that show up occasionally at various pick and pulls in BC. That might work if a forum member lives near one and can remove it for you. I have also come across one that someone had welded back together. Not that I am recommending it for safety reasons.
Have you checked wreckers in Alaska?

Good luck.

I think I tracked down a sway bar in Whitehorse. After scouring the local scrap yard I found a 85 Tercel hatchback 2wd. I ran out of time to pull the sway bar off but will return tomorrow to take that off for my 4wd wagon.

Any other recommended parts that are hard to come by that I should pull off this car? Thanks for all the help.

the front ends are the mostly the same (i think the front struts are slightly different though), so are the engines, carbs, dash trim, door trim...lots of good stuff. i would grab the carb and rebuild it, alternator, distributor, both steering knuckles for the bearings in them, sway bar end bushings, front window cranks...that's all i can think of off the top of my head.

the front steering knuckes are the same, if the bearings and seals are good I would get those, usually much cheaper to swap out a steering knuckle than replace the bearings and seals (much easier too).

the struts are 20mm shorter in length, but are otherwise interchangeable. the upper strut mount is the same if you needs some (they usually last a long time, but occasionally the rubber separates and you have to replace it). the rack is the same, and worth getting if you have any play in your steering rack. most parts from the firewall forward are the same, excapt grill, bumper and the strut length as noted.

Door trim will be different if it is a 2 door, and if it is a 4 door, the rear doors are different.

Thanks for all the help. I tracked down a sway bar off an 85 2wd hatchback and installed it successfully today. I also replaced the cv axle while I was at it and it is fully operational. I will clean it up a bit and post some pics. I am hoping to find some rear coil springs from an old pathfinder and get it lifted a bit as per the recommendations in the other section.

Just need to wire in a sound system and I will be pretty much where I started 15 years ago!!!

Thanks for the help. What a great forum!
