Hello all,
This hasn't happened to me before, today for the first time in a while put her into 4WD and could not move the 4WD drive shifter back into FWD. Drove about 15 miles home and gave the 4WD shifter a firm palm tap and it came out of 4WD. On previous occasions putting the shifter in and out of 4WD drive was some what effortless, what should I be looking for this problem?
Thanks in advance

Re: Stuck in 4WD
I've had some trouble with mine in the past putting it in reverse while moving the 4wd handle did the trick

Re: Stuck in 4WD
Are you driving on asphalt road or another hard service with 4wd? it only is meant for dirt or low traction conditions. please see all the other posts about this. you are killing your drivetrain.

Re: Stuck in 4WD
First off---- NO 4wd on dry Pavement------ wet slippery roads yes. Make sure your tire sizes are the same, tire pressures are the same ,tires have the same amount of tread on them ----- if All tires are not the same size ,due to pres ect, this causes the driveline to wind up which puts press on the 4wd syncro that engages the rear drive line . From time to time I'v found my car in 4wd, I'v always ran off the right side of the road, shoulder---- in Montana the shoulder is dirt,to allow the 2 right side tires to slip in the dirt -- unwinding the drive line, and then shifting out of 4wd. Gotto is also correct backing up will UN WIND the drive line so you can shift out of 4WD Larry

Re: Stuck in 4WD
all good advice. i've also found that for shifting while driving, holding gentle pressure on the 4wd shifter while turning the steering wheel back and forth helps.

Re: Stuck in 4WD
Thanks for all the replies!
When this happened the car was off road and in first gear. whish I was aware of the reverse trick, had to drive 14 miles back to base in 4wd, I'am doomed. Any way it appears this has happened to others before. The FSM in the trouble shooting section only states if there is trouble shifting or wont't shift sevice transmission or not enough grease on control linkages and to see MT-11 which in no way addresses greasing the the shift controls?

Re: Stuck in 4WD
Virtually everything on the tranny and t-case is internal if you make sure it has enough lubrication everything should run fairly smooth. Unless there is major problems inside the tranny.

Re: Stuck in 4WD
inside the tranny there is not much holding it in 4WD
most likely the cause is gear binding

Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.
