transmission 4.1

Post by Foryst »

I have up for grabs a 4.1 geared transmission i believe. I bought myself another 83 and it came with an extra transmission and motor in the back, boy was she dropped when i first laid eyes on this one. But anyhow i believe its the later year trans because of the wire plugs are different and in different locations. I'm not.sure of the condition at all. When i bought it he told me they both worked but I'm still on the fence with it. I already have an extra one out of my now parts car. I haven't counted any teeth yet but i believe its the 4.1. Again i don't the the running condition but it looks good to me. Anyone in the pnw thats interested? It's not letting me post pictures i was gonna show the wires my phone is jank at times

the transmission is a separate item from the bellhousing/differential (aka transaxle) and the two of them are bolted together
the transmission itself will swap to any 83-88 4wd tercel wagon
the differential is where the 4.1 vs 3.73 gear ratio comes into play and it has to match the rear differential
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

Try to comfirm if it's good or not!
Put a shifter in it and see if it cycles all the gears.
Then trun the input shaft by hand while you have a finger in the output hole"does one turn the other?" Do it in all 5 gears!
Then select 4wd does the rear output turn?

Working vs. Non working determines it's value

Pull the diff cover many 4.1's have a stamp on the ring gear "the big one" if not count the teeth of the ring and pinion and divide the two #'s
