you could probably borrow a bearing puller from local auto parts store
a cheap three jaw puller from harbor frieght would do it
may have to grind the ends (modify)
local 2nd hand store might have one too (thats where i got mine for less than 5.00)
when noise stops with clutch pedal pushed down usually means the inner input shaft bearing is wearing out
if the tranny was run for a long time with low oil level, that will do it in
slips out of first gear when clutch is in

Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

Just to be clear do you mean that the tranny is probably a lost cause or just that I will also need to replace the inner bearing.xirdneh wrote:

I always check the fluid every 4-5 weeks. Change every 40k. However when i bought the car some 60k miles ago the level was low, not empty but low. I added some lucas transmission fix to help slow the wear.
I will start rebuilding as soon as I have the parts I think ill need. I will use this thread for any problems I encounter in the rebuild.

as I reacall you can still get all of the main bearings and seals from various sources to rebuild the transmission. You will have to make gaskets or use sealants instead of gaskets. You will not be able to get new syncros nor most of the "hard" parts, but there are still used ones around with good enough parts to be able to assemble everything you need, if any of the hard parts (gears, shafts, etc) are too far worn to reuse.
Titus-Will toyota still lists the whole transmission assembly for the 4wd Tercel on their online toyota parts web site for $1750. for a whole new transmission. sounds like a good deal, but a lot to spend on a 30 year old car, not even sure if they actually can get it, but they show it on their website http://parts.tituswilltoyota.com/.
I have not checked for individual trans parts from the dealer net work, last time I check they could only find a single 2nd gear syncro available in the whole country.

Re: slips out of first gear when clutch is in
i would think the tranny could be saved if bearing does not break up
if a bearing breaks apart the pieces get in the main drive gears and break the teeth off the gears
i have some used bearings that are still good and some new inner input shaft bearings
synchros are not available (i have tried pretty hard to find some)
chances are your synchros will be ok
the 83 to 88 2wd and 4wd trannys share a lot of parts including synchros
