Choke Adjustment

Post by Meadow »

So, I was having problems getting the car to start. I have to rev the engine in the morning & the car reaks of gasoline when it is running. I tried to adjust the choke a few minutes ago, & now the idle is crazy high & there seems to be no changing it. What am I doing wrong here?

here's what i replied to your other post:

hi meadow. we're going to need more info to help you. does your tercel have a weber carb? what starting troubles were you having? what made you think you needed to adjust the choke? what did you adjust before it started idling so high?

this sounds like it should probably be a separate thread altogether.

how do you start the car? are you familiar with carbs? the proper starting procedure is to fully depress the throttle pedal once or twice (this sets the choke) and then turn the key. doing it in this order sets the choke. the engine will idle high while it is cold and progressively come down as it warms. at normal operating temp (about halfway up the gauge) the car should idle around 600-700 rpm for manual steering, and 800-900 rpm for power steering.

if you are giving it too much gas when starting, it will reek of gas for a short time because you have flooded the engine.

as for the idle issue you now have, you'll need to answer my previous questions.

if it smells like gasoline it could be flooding. if you have a weber you will need a fuel pressure regulation becasue the factory Tercel fuel pump will overpower it and cause excess fuel to leak past the float valve and cause flooding, and possibly high idel because is it getting too much fuel.

If you have the stock carb pull off the AAP vac line and see if it is full of gasoline. If so cap off both ends and it should solve your problems. The AAP diaphragm needs to be replaced, but it will run okay after it is warmed up with the vac lines to it capped off (it is only operational before the engine warms up to prevent stumble when you accelerate hard).
