Noise when pressing the clutch

Post by Terbus_driver »

Hi All,

So I've got a fairly high mileage 86 4wd wagon here and I am getting some fairly loud grinding sort of noises when i press the clutch all the way in. Sometimes it sounds like metal scrapping on metal (a higher pitch sound) but most of the time it is a grinding noise like a buggered bearing. My best guess is that the throw-out bearing is on its last legs.

Aside from pulling the engine/box out/off, does anyone know of any other temporary or band-aid solutions?

Cheers,
Terbus Driver

sounds like you are correct in your diagnosis. depressing the clutch pedal engages both the throwout and pilot bearings so one of them is the culprit but both require pulling either the engine or trans to access them. i don't know of any temp solutions for you, sorry.

i agree with dlb
when you do the job get a clutch kit (throwout, clutch disk, pressure plate and pilot bearing) ($90-120.00)
there are several write ups in the "Repair Guides" section on removing tranny/differential assy
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

It wouldn't hurt to machine the flywheel if it has hot spots or cracks.

the throw out bearing will seldom cause other problems, you can keep driving it until it gets so annoying you have to change it. But it will not usually harm anything to keep driving it the way it is. That is, if it is the t/o bearing.

good luck
