Hey everyone i just bought a tercel 1983 the engine is a 4A but i didnt get to drive it he said the tranny was blown and diff was blown. we moved a couple feet and it goes klunk. but he is giving me a 6 speed he says is good i dont know if it is i am hoping since there is no rebuild kits for it i dont know if i can rebuild the diff but anyways i hope everything works any tips would help
I also have a question do you guys/girs think these tercels will die faster now that there is no tranny parts for them
these cars are only getting older and more scarce but as long as those that still own them look after them, there should still be many 4wd tercels around for years to come.
with so few details, it's tough to say if your trans is really hooped. i would drain the oil out of it, checking for excessive metal shavings or chunks. there should be 4 liters of gear oil in there. if there is substantially less and it sounds like it was driven like that, then i would wager the trans is in fact blown. but you could get lucky and find it's just a blown CV joint. you have to get in there and dig around to find out.
if you swap the transmission, you must make confirm which transmission and rear diff you have in the car, and which ones you are putting in. 83-84 used 3.73 gearing, 85-88 used 4.11 gearing. the two are not compatible. the 4.11 trans has one extra electrical connection on it, for the 'extra low' dash light. that is the easiest way to check which transmissions you have. for the rear diffs, i believe you have to count the teeth. do a search on here to confirm that though.
If the car tries to move it's likley just the front diff and not the gear cluster itself.
As dlb says make SURE the other tranny has the right gears.
keep us posted if you find you need just the front diff/bell housing let me know before you take apart your other compete transaxle.(I may have the part)
you guys are not getting the tranny vs gear ratio thing
the 4wd trannys themselves, seperate from the transaxle/differential, are interchangable thru years 83-88
the transaxle/differential which is seperate from the transmission has the different gear ratios and are not interchangable thru the years 83-88.
you only have to worry about gear ratios when switching the transaxle/differential 83-84 (3.73ratio 41teeth on ring gear 11 teeth on pinion gear) 85-88 (4.1ratio 41 teeth on ring gear 10 teeth on pinion)
the confusion begins because the transaxle and tranny are often removed together as a unit
they are often bought and sold as a unit
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.
i think most of us understand that part rob. i assume most people are not up for separating the trans and front diff though so i don't bother getting into that. but you're right that it is an option so maybe we should mention it more. i'll add it to the FAQ too.
There is a good chance the differential is the problem
if your lucky it will be something simpler like one of the axles
i would drain the tranny oil and check for metal pieces on the magnetic drain plug
also how much metal flakes in oil

thnaks guys i believe it is the diff but it does not go in reverse too so i have to swap out for the six speed hopefully that trans is good but i need a rear diff to match 85 and up if anyone has one let me know
Bench test that transaxle before you install it!
I have the rear gears you need.
They cost me 99.00 bucks you can have them for the same plus shipping.
