4A-C carb onto a 3A?

Post by 4doorVIP »

Hey T4WD.
I own a 1981 Tercel running the 3A motor with a bad carburetor..

I've sourced a minty carb from the 4A-C motor but I'm not sure if it will work with this motor? It's either this, rebuild the 3A carb, or find a weber.

One concern I have is the 4A-C has 4 wires, vs only two in my 81 terc.

on later year tercels, i have noticed that the emissions sticker on the underside of the hood says the emissions stuff is the same for 3ac and 4ac engines. but the emissions did change slightly between years in some places, and the fact that your 1st gen carb has only 2 wires makes it seem like they may not be compatible. your 1st gen carb probably only has the single wire fuel cut solenoid and the choke, whereas the 4a carb has those plus the two-wire fuel cut solenoid. my guess is that if you put the 4a carb on your car, it will run funny at some times due to the two wire fuel cut solenoid not being activated at all.

As long as the primary (aft side of carb) solenoid (whether it is single wire or double) has juice going to it while the engine is running you will probably be OK. At least it will idle properly.
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

there are some emissions changes between the fist gen tercel and the later tercels and corollas (that use the 4ac carbed engine). the carbs are very similar, but some of the vac lines are different. You can likely make it work but you would have to verify what each port does and either find the correct vac line for it, or cap it off if it is not used in your car. It would be much easaier to just rebuild your carb, not that difficult, I think Xirdeneh made a youtube video taking you through the steps of a carb rebuild. a lot faster and easier than trying adapt the wrong carb to your car.

thanks for the good words everyone, I will look at rebuilding this carb - it is also the most cost effective option at this point!

check Rockauto.com for carb kits, sometimes they have clearance carb kits for our car for only $7. but typically expect to pay from $20 to $30 for a good kit. Well worth it.

Before you rebuild the carb, make sure everything else in the vac and fuel system is operating properly, no vac leaks, etc.
