ECU, Carb & other questions

Post by mcl007 »

Hey T4WD!

I'm from Russia and I have a toyota sprinter carib - japans brother of american tercel.

If intresting - welcome to http://www.drive2.ru/r/toyota/960911/ (it's my logbook) for more info
My questions for you:

Do you have a repair manual of tercel/carib al-25 with a Twin Variable Venturi Carburator?

Do you have a ECU pinouts for 3A engine? (any)

My engine version is a 3A-SU

Thanks!

welcome, mcl007. you are one of the few eastern members here. i actually can't think of any other recent or active ones, so you may be the ONLY eastern member right now!

i checked out your logbook but couldn't figure out how to navigate the site. is there a button to translate it to english that i'm not seeing?

i want to see more pics of your engine bay. i can already see that your coolant overflow reservoir is mounted in a different spot than ours, and the emissions stuff looks completely different too. very interesting.

we have a factory service manual for the car available for download here on the site:

viewtopic.php?f=2&t=8103

it has a section on disassembling the carb. also, here is a write-up by a member here on rebuilding a carb:

viewtopic.php?f=7&t=7341&p=54674

and even better yet, here's a video by the same member on how to rebuild a carb:

viewtopic.php?f=7&t=11045&p=81899

i'm not sure by what you mean about 'ECU pinouts'. are you asking what each pin on the ECU is for? if so, i don't believe i've ever seen that info. the factory service manual only ever mentions the ECU in passing, and it never goes over how to check it.

I use Chrome for a web browser and use its translate feature. It worked ok for the Russian Tercel website.

Try page 876 of the PDF manual, I believe that is what you are looking for.

on 876 page i see only colors of wire.

gr-b - grey (or green?) with black

but i need number of pins in ECU where to connect this wire, becouse i want install one k-type carb from 3A-C or EFI if I can not find information of Twin V-carb system. standard wiring is not suited to this option

When I get home I will try to remember to check the wiring manual I have. It is for 85 or 86.

in the world has a lot of interesting things =)

This engine (3A-SU) has a 90H.P. (66kW) at 6000r.p.m.; compression ratio 9.3 vs 9.0 on standart 3A; "swirl intake version" - swirl the mixture on a Cylinder Head channel; two veturi carburator. This engine was made only for Japan.

Hey! I find a English design drive2 =) link: https://www.drive.net/r/toyota/960911/

Welcome to the forum!

I think you can use the wire diagram in combination with the emissions control and fuel system chapters in the manual to determine what each pin does on the ECU. it is a rather simple device, basically a series of on/off relays for certain engine conditions.

Those variable venturi carbs are actually pretty good, they are Japanese SU style carbs (why do you want to put on a two barrel carb if you have twin side draft carbs?. I owned some early volvos, and worked on a number of british cars that had the British version of them. the early Datsun 240z and the Dasun 1600 and 2000 sports car also had them. You will not find much on it in the north american service manual, but I am sure there are website with instructions on how to tune these carbs.

you have to get the throttle plates synchronized so they open exactly the same amount, than balance the fuel mixture in each carb, and than adjust the mixture so it runs optimally. I can do it by ear, but most instructions will tell you to use an exhaust meter (not really necessary but I think most younger people have lost the "ear" it takes to know when it is running correctly). Also, make sure the dampeners have light oil in them to the fill line (ATF works good, do not over fill!), if not they will never run property. Good luck.

This is another car in this configuration from Russia:

https://e-a.d-cd.net/85a7ce4s-960.jpg

I bought this car it did not work. :( previous owner had prepared her for the repair and sell me. I do not know how to connect the vacuum hoses and wires to where they should be.. so I decided to ask you, because I did not find anything in RU-internet zone...
