Half shaft seal of approval

Post by Gottolovem »

I know their are multiple threads on half shaft seal part numbers but I'm starting a new one anyway! Today I went to all my local part houses and they have the wrong seal in the boxes  they all had #223240 in a #223235 box.
I want the seal with the "dust collar"on it. I believe both seals will work?
What is the disadvantage to using the seal without a little dust collar?
They both fit the c/v and the front dif, one just looks like it will keep more grime out.
I don't understand why ALL the national oil seals are now without the collar yet have the same number?

this is the beck arnley seal i just put in both sides of my terc. it has the lip. only weird thing was that one parts place (one i don't deal with often because of this kind of thing) said the seal was listed as NLA -- but when i went to my regular parts place, they got it no problem. so i don't know if this seal is no longer being produced or if the weird parts place just sucks at getting stuff. like i said, this wasn't the first time i've run into this kind of thing with them.

I think the one without the lip has dimensions that allow it to fit and work, but was for a different application. so they used it to superceed the old design with the lip. It is best to use the lip because without it, fine sand and dust can get between the seal lip and axle race and wear it out faster than the one with the lip.

that's what I suspected too just seems like more debris can get in there and mess things up.
The guy at napa was able to locate the right seal for me today. Thanks guys

Yea i looked at the price on rock auto and it was half  .
I need this tercel tranny swap out of my hair tomorrow.
The tranny for my Tahoe gets here this week and it's priority for me so I can go retrieve the tercels in California.

Same thing happened to me, two completely diffrent oil seals in two identical boxes.
I'd like to get some for when/if I ever need them.
It takes more fossil fuel resources to produce new vehicles than it would take to maintain and fuel any 70's or 80's vehicle for a million miles.
