Driving with a missing speedometer cable

Post by irowiki »

Alright so on Buck, the speedometer cable was ripped out by a tree branch or something when we went off the road.

I have not had a good look at it, how hard is this to fix? Might it pop back in, or is something probably broken? Can I easily seal the hole so it does not leak out while driving? Or would not enough leak out in ~50 miles to matter, I know the transmission is full unless it's been dripping as it sits.

Picture we took while getting our stuff:

if your cable is long enough you can remove that fitting and connect the cable to tranny
for temporary fix
i have done this before

I do not think trans lube will come out the speedo hole, but I would not take that risk. if you loose all of your gear oil you will trash your trans.

Body shop guy said the fitting on the transmission was stripped when the cable got ripped out. Maybe I can macgyver plug it until I'm home?

Edit: Took some pictures, for science, of our spare transmission. Looks like I could duck tape that fitting and hose clamp it.

I think the spinny part that attaches to the transmission got ripped out from the L, based on the picture a few posts back.
