Picked up and installed my new K&N into my tercel yesterday. Works like a hot damn. Maybe I'm just imagining it, but it seems like I do have a bit of a power increase. I'll try to take a pic when I have a chance. I ordered the E-2690 unit and it was about $50CAD before taxes ($40USD). A good investment if you ask me.

Do you know how the K&N compares to the Fram Air-Hog?

Nope, don't know. I've just had good luck with K&Ns in the past, and they are easy to get for pretty much any car, so thats why I'm sticking with them. There are lots of test results you can look at online of the different filter styles/brands though. The trick with the K&Ns is to clean/oil them regularly and properly. If you clean them the wrong way, you'll wreck them and eventually your engine too...

The Air-Hog is a cheap K&N Ripoff. Repeat on that; CHEAP. In design. I just don't trust FRAM very much. Low quality of filtration. Had them collapse a few times, luckily without damage.
You clean and reoil any reusable filter the wrong way and it'll screw your engine over the same.

I can confidently recommend a K&N.

this may be a dumb question, but does putting in a K&N filter involve any rehosing/plugging of the vacuum lines? My understanding -- which may be wrong -- is that the k&N filter replaces the entire air cleaner. True? If so, where do the various vacuum attachments wind up?

Only the K&N Filtercharger kits replace the whole assembly. A sized-to-fit Filter just replaces what a FRAM would replace. The element.
