I have a 82 tercel. it is hard starting. Had a mechanic go to my place and saw that there was a problem with the wire going to the starter. The mechanic did some DIY so the car will start. It worked several times - switched off and on the car with no hard starting. By the next day, it won't start again.Had another mechanic (different) and saw the lousy patch up. After a few adjustment to the carburetor and my car worked again. So I brought my car to the shop. Had tune up, change oil, new fuel pump, new engine fillter, new spark plugs and new hoses. Added some brake fluids and automatic transmission fluid. After the job is done, I was able to drive my car. But just afer a few minutes of driving, my engine stopped on the highway. Had to start on and off. Today, my car won't budge.
Any ideas? I don't know where to start the repairs. Bought the car secondhand as a restoration project. Wiring is extremely bad but I never ran into problems ever. I dont know if I should start with the engine, carburetor or wiring.

Re: Hard start 82 Tercel
you need to tell us more details about HOW the car is hard to start. when you turn the key, does
- nothing happen
- engine cranks but does not fire
- engine cranks but only sputters
- engine cranks, runs for a second, then dies?
the more details you provide, the more likely we will be able to help you. hopefully you have some tools and can fix this on your own. old cars get very expensive if you always take them to shops for work.

Re: Hard start 82 Tercel
Most shops don't even employ carb capable mechanics, those that do will keep you commin back - I trust only a select few under my hood.
It takes more fossil fuel resources to produce new vehicles than it would take to maintain and fuel any 70's or 80's vehicle for a million miles.

Re: Hard start 82 Tercel
ok so the starter, battery, and their connections are probably fine. it is most likely going to be no fuel or no spark. once it dies and won't start again, you can try dribbling gas down the carb throat while someone turns the key. if it starts up, fuel is the issue. if not, spark is the issue.
Re: Hard start 82 Tercel
I'll bring this one up with my mechanic. car is at the shop. Will keep you guys posted on what is really the culprit. thanks!
Re: Hard start 82 Tercel
here it goes, had my carb cleaned and rebuilt. it was extremely dirty. Its gasket is worn out. Had to replace it. Also, opted for new air filter. Everything is working now. No more hard starting - finally! Will have my car rewired tomorrow. Thank you guys for your inputs!
