Post by bbpowell »

Just purchased a 1983 Tercel 4x4 wagon. Are parts still available from Toyota or is it scrounge for parts time?

Depends on the parts. What does it need?

Toyota stops production of replacement parts 20 years after end of last model year. There are still some New Old Stock parts out there, but it's a goose chase. I've been looking for sunroof cables for over a year, and there's prolly a list of people here looking for a clinometer.

best of luck to you.

welcome to the forum!

Almost all of the mechanical and suspension/brake parts are still available new from aftermarket suppliers, many from the dealer because the parts were common to other models of Toyotas. I get a lot of parts from Rockauto.com, and from my local NAPA or Autozone store, usually next day. Body parts are kinda rare new, but still some around in the wrecking yards. Sometimes worth buying a junker as a parts car if you have the room.

The transmission is the critical item, you can still get most bearings seals, and similar parts, but no syncros, certainly no kits, and all of the "hard" parts would be wrecking yards or from parts cars. If you find good used transmissions, and intend to keep your car a long time, buy and keep it as a spare. They are fairly durable, but they have not made any since 1987, so all of the ones out there have lots and lots of miles on them.
