'86? dlx - victoria bc - $1200

Post by dlb »

ad says it's 88 but it's obv not. overpriced. rust, damaged and mismatched front fender, starting issue, window cranks need some love.

Price has dropped to $850

I've been looking to pick one of these up for a while just wondering how many KM will these engines last? I want something to have fun in and also be fairly reliable driving around BC without having to tear the whole thing apart immediately. I know its hard to speak specifically for this car but what have you guys seen these things go up to?

Am handy and have been working on my motorcycle for over a year now ready to dive into something a bit more complicated.

do you live on the island, jread?

if maintained properly, 3a engines can live on forever. even if they need head gaskets, it's not too big a job. it's such a small engine and there's lots of room in the engine bay so it's relatively easy to get in there and pull it apart. as far as hard numbers go, there are several members on here with 700,000 km on their tercels. i just bought one with 391,000 km on it and it runs great.

how can you tell it's an ~86 rather than an 88? the entire front end seems to have been replaced from the fenders forward. are there other indicators?

sorry it sold jread. if it's any consolation, judging by some of the details in the ad i still think it was probably quite overpriced. if another one appears out here i'll gladly go check it out for you. bc ferry costs are a real bastard.

entrax, the grill and headlights are the big giveaway that it was not an 87/88. the vertical rear windshield wiper first appeared in 86 so it couldn't be an 85. the 83/84s have the blocky 4wd logo and a different grill so it obv wasn't one of those. that's how i ended up at 86. it's possible the grill and headlights were swapped but not likely, i think. most people prefer the 87/88 headlights. incidentally, you might want to put some protective adhesive film over your headlights. if they get cracked or broken, they are about $75 each at most wreckers now. the protective film is cheap and easy to apply to it's great insurance. i made a post about it here.

Thanks for the offer! Will hit you up if I see anything would love to have one of these.

It almost looked like he had an accident and replaced the entire front end as it was a slightly different colour.

If you don't mind that would be most appreciated.

Edit: Just got to a computer, emailed him telling him I'm interested and I'll have a friend take a look at it. If you've got time and feel like taking a look I'd be super stoked have wanted one of these for a bit now and am not really concerned to much about looks more about how well it runs. If its got some minor problems I don't mind getting my hands dirty but any major rebuilds I may shy away from especially if they are super costly... Also transmission problems seem to be a no go for these since the transmissions are supposedly pretty rare at this point.

i tried to meet with this seller today, no dice. he is a flake. when we talked yesterday he was enthusiastic at first, saying stuff like "i use it as my daily so you may have seen it around. f-ing beautiful as a daily." i suggested meeting at 2 pm today and he said "maaaaybe, i'll get back to you on that." he seemed to be pushing for me to just go take a look at it parked somewhere, saying "meng, if you want to see it you'll see it parked on fifth and topaz all the time unless i'm out." i said i wanted to test drive it but he blew that off and said "yeah if you cruise by if you're near you can check it out first." i said i live 45 min out of town and that was that. i asked him to keep me posted about meeting at 2 pm today.

at 1 pm today, he said he couldn't meet "but if you want to make it into vic i'll be around with the car so just let me know if you can make it into town so we can arrange a meet." he's basically telling me to drive 45 min into victoria with the chance that he MIGHT be able to show it to me, but no guarantees, even after trying to set up a meeting a day ahead.

in short, he's an annoying flake and obv not very interested in selling the car. sorry jread.
