Very noticeable torque steer

Post by simon »

Hi all.

Either at low of high speed, my steer will turn if I let go the gas pedal, and inversely if I engage the throttle. I have reads about issues of torque steer, but it seems to be mostly happening under heavy acceleration. I'm talking here, at cruising speed either on highway at 100km/h or on street at 50 km/h, I can feel the steer coming loose (turning slightly to the left) when i remove my foot from the gas pedal.

I feel this is a rather new feeling. I know my axles need replacement (clicking sound when turning left)

I also know my suspension is quite soft. Needs to me replaced.

Ti-rods also need replacement, have a play in steering.

I know! it needs a lot... If only I had a heated garage! Winter has fallen on us here in Montréal.

if you know you have all those other issues that could very well contribute to the problems you describe, i would take care of them first before looking for more problems.

however i would also add checking the alignment to your to-do list. the toe is easy to adjust at home using keith's method

but the camber is more difficult and probably requires a shop to do it. i'm not sure if the castor can be adjusted at all.

I would add that you should also check your motor mounts. The way you describe the torque steer is classic to FWD with broken mounts, but that usually applies to transverse mounted engines. I have not experienced a longitudinal engine with FWD and broken mounts, but its worth a look anyway.

cv axles will not cause that, likely it is either the front or rear swab bar bushing, particularly where it attaches to the lower arm. also check for very badly worn or sloppy tie rod ends or ball joints. once that is corrected it should bring the alignment back into spec unless you have something bent.

Also, make sure your tires are same size, same brand and properly inflated. one low tire can act like that.

Simon, have you solved your problem yet? Sounds like sway bar bushings on one side blown out.

Thanks for the replies.

I just changed the two smaller bushings in the lower arm, but the ones attached to the sway bar were to be done as well. Then it might very well be the major contributor to the problem.

Also, that bad ti-rod on the right side probably doesn't help.

Xmas break is coming, I'll try and take care of these quick.
