1983 Tercel SR5 $2700

Post by xibyxvii »

I'm selling my 1983 Tercel SR5
It has 196,000 miles and still runs strong.
I've replaced the timing belt, clutch, breaks all round, exhaust including muffler and catalytic converter (it has passed California smog), new radiator, new windshield, exchanged the interior with that of an 86 (all but the seats), the front end has been rebuild as well including the strut cartridge. It sets on 16" rims with 205/45 tires. The original rims with brand new tires accompany the vehicle. The price is firm. Call or text for more info 510-333-1443

Yes. I'm selling her. I purchased her for $1,000 and put $3,200+ in her to pass California smog and drive daily without any issues.

No, I was wondering why you are selling, especially after so much work!

Got a Prius and started driving for Uber. If I don't get my asking price I'll have to keep her :-)

Uber = Lyft and others.
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uber_%28company%29 for info about Uber.

Much controversy about "ride-sharing" in general and Uber itself has had some interesting headlines recently about its CEO's remarks and the company's practices.

Much of the controversy involves complaints by existing taxi companies having to meet stringent appearance, safety, and insurance regulations that the ride-sharing companies skirt or ignore. Of course, competition is also involved.
Lyft in particular, at least here in STL, made an arrogant and outlaw and illegal appearance here during the Summer and has been subsequently forbidden to operate, pending new regulations. Uber is negotiating with the City and surrounding (much larger) County.

A good and educational example of the conflict between established (and regulated to the point of stagnant crony level market controls) and free-market wild west, DIY ethos.

"Safety" will be the siren song for all the control freaks to run our lives going forward.

If nothing else, the constitution enshrines to me: I don't need to be kept safe, I'll handle that myself through common sense and facing the inherent "risks" of simply being alive on a rock hurdling through space...thank you.

I understand the complaint, the taxi companies have been regulated to the point of being not profitable, so they pass laws protecting their "territory", so there is little/no competition between them (under the guise of safety). So when the ride sharing comes along (a market solution to costly taxi rides), the taxi companies cry foul. of course the political response is to blow with the direction of major campaign contributions, either restrict the market further to protect the costly monopolies they created, or to allow "alternatives", that cost less.

Recently they taxi lobby lost in Seattle, ride sharing is "in". suits the socialist mind set of most Seattle voters anyway, so mayor (a socialist himself) has recently made a public statement that it will be allowed.

The modern cars are all leaden with costly federal requirements, often creating a hazard in themselves (the recent exploding air bag recall has shown). I keep thinking I want to get something really old and hazardous: like a like a bug eyed sprite or a fiat 850, strip it and rebuild it with performance parts, and not a single piece of federally mandated safety or emissions equipment on it. Just to show I do not need federal safety mandated crap to have a fun car to drive. Heck, I might even run on propane to avoid all the federal and state fuel taxes on it too.

Competition is good. It cost me $1,200 just to get my Tercel to pass California emissions. I was torn between driving an old car and crossing over to the dark side and go hybrid. Needless to say the dark side seems much brighter when you are on it. My Prius has a 150,000 mile 4 year warranty on the battery. Sad to say as well engineered as the Prius is the battery is still no recyclable. But 50mpg, heated seats and a/c is difficult to turn down, especially when I'm making subliminal income to drive it...not to mention getting people safely from point a to point b. Anyway, who wants to buy my Tercel?!?!!?!

Easy to scoff at until you or a loved one is injured in one of those ride-sharing cars and has to fight it and its driver. This would also include being injured while in another car it would hit and also having ones property damaged in a collision with one of those vehicles.
Existing, regular for-hire, cab companies, regardless of your opinion of them or their rates or their drivers, invariably have to meet certain criteria on the safety of the vehicles and appropriate insurance. And that compliance is costly.
