Car wont idle right sometimes stalls

Post by shambug »

When im idling in neutral the car will drop rpms to 600 or so and then shoot up to 1600 then repeat. Often the car will die when coming to a hard stop. She's been doing this all of last year, but it never died and it wasn't as bad maybe 800 - 1200 rpms. Now its worse so time to get it fixed. New re-manufactured distributor and new spark plugs. Just timed it when I put on new distributor.

typical symptoms of a vacuum leak. check all of the vac lines, and that they are routed properly using your vac diagram from FSM or this form. do not assume who ever worked on your car last knew how to put all of the vac lines to their correct location. particularly check the large one that comes from the base of the carb to the underside of the air cleaner assembly, they tend to fall off (I put a tie wrap or cable tie on mine to keep it on).

Sorry to intrude; I may not navigate the forum well but, could anyone link me to that vac diagram? I keep finding references to it but I can't get my hands on the thing!

It is a sticky in the Repair Guides Forum: https://tercel4wd.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2810
Note that it is for USA Federal car - if you have a CA or Canadian car, you will have to go to the FSM on this site; all are in it in glorious black-and-white spaghetti. It can be downloaded. It is also a sticky in the same Forum.

Found my vacuum leak its coming from where the carb meats the intake between the firewall and carb but it doesn't seem to be the seal, I spayed carb cleaner directly the seal and no big difference in rpm but spay the area and thats were you can tell. I was planning on upgrading to a weber anyway. I just ordered a new one with the jet kit hopefully that will fix it.
