The Snap transmission swap thread

Post by irowiki »

Now that I have a transmission, I'm going to tackle swapping out the blown one in Snap as soon as Party is done. This should be simpler than swapping an engine, eh?

A few questions. What seals do I need? I have the output shaft, input shaft, main shaft, and extension seal in my rockauto cart right now.

How can you tell if the currently installed clutch is any good? The guy claimed he had replaced it before the transmission actually went (when he replaced the CV axles etc).

If you are talking about the Tercel clutch, you can look at the automatic clutch adjuster linkage located behind the clutch pedal. If you watch the clutch pedal as you step on the clutch, you will see a pawl travel a little, then catch a tooth on a pie shaped section of a wheel.

I may have this backwards, but I think the pie wheel (for lack of a better term) moves toward the rear of the car as the clutch wears down so the further down the pie section the pawl travels, the more the clutch is worn, but I could have that backwards.

It may be that the pie section moves toward the front of the car as the clutch wears. Its in the FSM is someone can post a link to that here. I can't seem to find it anymore.

don't forget the 4wd shifter seal. it's NLA but generic replacements can found. i installed one that c_j gave me and it worked perfectly.

Thanks David, I PM'd him!

Is there a seal from the driveshaft to the rear diff? (Assuming I need to remove the driveshaft to remove the transmission)

Rock auto sells all of the trans seals: input, front cv axles seals (the beck arnly has the core ct dust seal lip on them), the rear out put shaft seal, and the selector lever shaft seal. I would not attempt to replace the rear diff front seal, likey you will mess up the ring and pinion gear critical clearance and destoy the rear diff. If you need a new seal on teh input shaft of the diff, pull it out and have a shop that does toyota diff repairs/overhauls and have them replace the rear diff input shaft seal and set the ring and pinion clearance.

good luck.

look in "transmission notes" in "repair guides" section
it covers the seals
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

That is an odd seal that they used in lexus's and scions and yaris's... I'll order two.

The guy who sold me mine said the same thing, I thought the clutch desengage was a little shallow (might have been a contributing factor to the possible demise of my tranny) pressure plate didn't completely disengage till the pedal was nearly through floorboard)

Looking at the adjuster under the dash and its position I'm sure dude lied out his ass to me, its all the way to its mechanical limit!
Heres what my FSM says in the introduction of the clutch chapter.
