cv axle stuck

Post by jann_e_gunn »

I'm In the process of pulling my transmission but my right side cv axle is stuck in the tranny. The other side popped out fine and this is a new axle that installed this year. I've been prying on it for about half a day now and it's not seeming to budge...any ideas? I'm wondering if the new c clip which was tough to install could be preventing it from coming loose.

do you remember if it went in hard when you installed it
i recently bought a new axle that went in hard and would not go all the way in
the splines were bad
happened to another member recently also
even though it only went in abt 3/4ths of the way it in was very difficult to get it back out
we both used a spider gear and valve lapping compound to fix the spline
hammering the gear on and off till it slid freely

i would continue pulling transaxle with shaft intact
i am not at home so i cannot go out and check but you
might be able to get at end of shaft by removing transaxle cover plate
should be able to see very end of shaft where it passes through spider gear
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

Is the tranny trash?
I like to use a really big flat head screwdriver etween the axle and tranny pound it the further you go the fatter the screwdriver gets and therefore pops it out.
If the tranny os shot you have nothing to loose

i also like this technique. just aim the tip of the screwdriver off-center so that it avoids the shaft of the CV axle and give it a few whacks.

This is my favorite for removing CV axles - I've used it on several cars now - as well as a myriad of other tasks.

That's the one I've been using, Archinstl.... but to no avail...I've tried a big flat head and the pry bar. Given it much more than few whacks. It's not budging at all, so I think I'm just going to try and pull the trans out with the axle attached. If I can't get it off, I might just put a new one in with the new trans. I'm not really into this idea since its just a few months old, but it really seems like it's not gonna budge.

if the trans is trashed it is likely there are metal flakes in the spines and snap ring that holds the cv axle stub in place. this had happened to another forum member, I think he flushed the diff with solvent and fresh oil (atf would be a good choice) and than worked the axle stub back and fourth and if finally came free. I would guess he worked the metal particles out from under the snap ring.

I may be way off here, but can I remove the transmission only, leaving the transaxle with the cv axle in place. I think the transaxle is still good, just the gearbox is bad.

yes, the diff and trans can be separated while still in the car.. xirdneh likes to remove transmissions this way.
