Front shocks, will they fit?

Post by pekka »

Hi everybody!
This is my first post and i'm sorry if my english is rusty. I'm from Sweden and it's been a couple of years since i took english in school.
I have a question about my sons '86 tercel 4wd. Will the front shocks of a '83 tercel al21 fit my sons '86 al25?
i've found a pair on the Swedish ebay for peanuts so i'm tempted to buy them. It's not the complete struts but only the shocks not the cartridge.
i hope you know what i meen and i'm sorry if i'ts hard to understand my "Swenglish" :P

Welcome to the Club! Your "Swenglish" is 100% better than my "Engdish!"
The shocks will probably fit, but in checking KYB's catalog (what I used on my Goldie), the 2WD is shown to be #36030, same as the 2WD hatch, and the 4WD is shown to be #36037.
Dunno the difference, but I presume the 4WD is stiffer? Perhaps Toy anticipated rougher usage (even though the 4WD was not intended for really rough stuff)?

"Tack så mycket" for the answer.
Well then.... It looks like i `m gonna by them and see what happens :P .
I would presume that the oem shocks has lost their stiffnes over the years ( i know the feeling  ) and anything is better than the rusted out seeping shadow of the original shocks.
I will let you know how it goes if i win the auktion.
Thank you!

4WD front strut is an inch longer I think. Extra weight from the transmission? more ground clearance?

yes 4wd struts are 1" longer than 2wd struts (overall)
i have had the 2wd struts on one of our 4wd tercel's for the last 10 years or so
front end sits 1" lower
it has worked fine
should get a front end alignment if you switch them
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

Thank you very much for your input!
I think he will have to live with a little lower ride, although he would rather had gone the other way :).
The snow can get pretty deep here in the winter and he's always driving on the worst roads possible.
Thank you!

I think you can get spacers to raise it back up a bit.
