Cold blooded

Post by irowiki »

So the wagon does really bad when cold started, when it is say, below 30-40 F. This may be related to the running rich issue which I still need to troubleshoot (been sick). Or maybe it is because the wagon is from California.

To start out, the other day I plugged her in (engine block heater) for eight hours as a test, then started her up when the temp was around 25 F. Instantly fired up, fast idle kicked in and went to about 2,500 RPM. Was as close to "running like a dream" as you can get.

Any other time, when she isn't plugged in and the temps drop, I give her two gas pedals to the floor, start her up. She'll start up but start bogging and choking right away, and will die unless I give her gas to manually rev her up to 2k RPM. All the while thick clouds of gray/black gas smoke is pouring out the back, strong gas smells all around. If you sit for a bit gas actually starts dripping out the tailpipe! If I try idling her at this point she bounces around 1K RPM. The fast idle doesn't kick in until a minute or two after she starts.

If you try driving while she's like this, say, put her in reverse within 30 seconds of a cold start, she dies, and won't restart unless wide open throttle is applied, and even then I have to nurse her to start.

If she is plugged in first, or at operating temperature, she starts, runs and idles fine.

I plan on getting some videos to give y'all a better idea of what's going on, but until then, any ideas?

have you checked the sight glass for the fuel level? i would start there.

when i had issues with the carb i recently rebuilt, i could not see the fuel level at all so i didn't know if it was too high or too low. it took me forever but i finally realized i could just keep opening and closing the throttle by hand until either the fuel level came down into view (meaning it had been too high) or the carb stopped squirting gas into the primary barrel (the level had been too low).

it should start in cold weather as well as warmed up. Many parts of California have below freezing weather, most of California in fact is NOT Los Anglese and San diego.

Sounds like something in the cold start circuit is not working properly. See the FSM troubleshooting guide.

David: Okay I'll start with that. Will probably be this weekend because I'm still under the weather.

Peter, I was kidding about the california thing, hence the emote!

Where is the cold circuit troubleshooting in the FSM?

fuel system chapter I think, you might also check the emissions control system chapter since so many components are related.

Just an update. Finally swapped the carb on Pokey with the carb we got from Petros (that Turtcel field tested). I am happy to report I can do a carb swap in about 30 minutes now, not counting prep time.

The difference is night and day. She starts right up, fast idle works, and she no longer churns out a huge cloud of fuel on startup.

This also seems to solve other issues I was having with the running car:
