replaced speedo cable and its still not working

Post by Tercel__jon »

The spedometer itself is good. Ive got a new cable from the L adaptor to the speedo. L adaptor is good. And when i drained the trans i pulled the driven gear, its fine as well. Sticking my finger into the hole the speedo driven gear goes, i can fell the worm gear and can move it freely both directions. I know i have to take the trans apart to fix, at least take the tailshaft off. Has anyone else had this sort of issue?

Did you actually spin the transmission to see if the gear moves? I would confirm that first.

You need to make sure that the E-- shaped snap ring that holds the spedo drive gear in the housing is there. this happened to me twice, i went to the dealer and bought a new e--ring for 1.00 ,the ring wears out, breaks ,falls in the trany ,which allows the gear to dis-engage the gear on the main shaft. this drove me Nuts till i figured this out ---- my speedo worked only in 5th gear-- go figure. this e-ring holds the speedo gear in the alunmium housing that bolts into the trany. EVERY one should replace this e-ring in their cars ,this ring just wears thin and breaks. Larry

I'm not sure what you mean by the "E-ring"... is it shown in the following parts diagram? (click on the link below... hopefully it'll work)

I think its the clip --this clip prevents the shaft from sliding up and down in the housing, and dis-engaging with the drive worm gear. I bought 2 of these from the dealer for a couple of bucks Larry

The part number for the clip from toyota is 90468-12005, this should fix the problem Larry
