Carb troubles
Carb troubles
Hey all! just got myself an 84' SR5 and i can not seem to get the carb to work right. From what i have read already it seems these buggers are just a nightmare to get working right! My current issues are as follows: occasional shutter when accelerating, mostly once she is warmed up and this is at all gears. pretty sure the choke is not working at all since when she is cold it idles at around 400 rpm, but once warm the idle is between 900 and 1400. if anybody has any advice or links it would be greatly appreciated! (absolutely love this car though!)

welcome to the forum, kyle.
checking the choke is very easy, just follow the steps in the factory service manual (aka FSM). here is a link to download it.

additionally, there is lots of good info in the FAQ for any new tercel owner. check it out here if you haven't already.

the fact that your idle fluctuates so much (900-1400 rpm when warm) sounds like a vacuum leak to me. make sure all the hoses are going to the right places, suck on all the diaphragms and make sure you can't suck air through, and confirm the carb mounting nuts and intake and exhaust manifold bolts are all snug. if you still find the idle is erratic after that, spray carb cleaner around the carb and manifolds while the engine is running. if the rpm increase when you spray in a certain area, there is a vacuum leak in that spot.
let us know how it goes.

Re: Carb troubles
Check your throttle positioner, and your fast idle. Half the carbs I've worked with had the fast idle adjusted out to near zero so it did nothing. Shade tree mechanics perhaps?

welcome to the forum.
the stock carb is complex but not difficult to learn and maintain. when adjusted properly it works great. sounds like the fast idle adjsutment is too low, it should idle at about 1500 rpm after a cold start, and than drop down as it warms up. It is an easy adjustment, you just need to learn where it is and how to check and adjust it. see the FSM.
