New CV joints/Front drive shafts

Post by VINTAGE GRUMBLE »

Hello, i'm new to the forum and the Tercel world, and have a few questions I hope you lovely people may be able to help me with. I'm from New Zealand and have just purchased a 1988 AL25 Tercel. I've wanted one for many years, but the early ones are very rare over here, as are parts. The car I have may need new front outer CV joints or complete drive shafts, and what I need to know is, are the outer CV's/drive shafts exclusive to the 4wd tercels, or are they the same as the 2wd cars or any other old corollas for that matter? Any info would be great. Also if you could point me in the direction of a good source of aftermarket CV's/drive shafts for tercels that would be great.

Thank you guys!

Cheers, Thomas.

welcome, thomas. most of the forum members are in north america so i don't know how much help we will be with sourcing parts down in NZ. however, a few forum members are in australia so maybe they will be able to help with that.

what i can tell you is that both new and remanufactured front drive shafts are widely available here in north america, and they are the same for the 2wd and 4wd tercel wagons (and hatchbacks too, i believe). i'm not sure if any other cars share the axles though.

Thank you for that sir, that's very helpful, as I can get CV's for the std FWD tercels here in NZ. I was having trouble finding information that confirmed the FWD and 4WD ones were the same. If worse comes to worse, it wouldn't be too much trouble to import a set from NA or ozey.

Cheers, Thomas.

I would suggest that you take to used axle with you so you can compare the two next to each other.
In NA there is a core charge anyway so you would need the old axle anyway

Good luck

Welcome to the Club!
Owning an '87 or '88, however, sometimes gives problems when sourcing parts.
The difficulty lies in Toyota having introduced Gen III in the sedans in '87 while continuing the Gen II wagon for another year plus. Many parts houses do not recognize that there were two concurrent Tercel models for those two years.
I'd just look for parts using an '86 as the source vehicle.

I installed new GSP axles some years ago and have been happy. No core charge here. These are made in China, so I'd imagine they are also available in NZ or OZ. They were also about the same price as remans, which oft have problems.

That's all very handy information, i'll have to pull them out and take a lot of measurements and photos to make sure I get the correct ones. I will likely have to order them online as I live in the middle of nowhere, as not many places in NZ hold parts for Tercels, as they are not at all common here.

Thank you for the brand names of the after market items, i'll look them up.

Cheers, Thomas.

welcome Thomas,

all of the second gen (mk II you call it I think) Tercels use the same cv axles (the CV joint and axle are intergral, one unit). from '83 through '86 wagon, hatch back and coup, 4x4 and FWD all use the same front axles, as do the '87-'88 wagon FWD and 4x4. These are not the same for any other model, including the '87 and later hatch back and sedan.

Are you saying axles from an 87 are different than 83-86? Why?

He's saying the 87-88 Hatchback/Sedan axles are different than the 87-88 Wagon axles!

Ok, are the 87-88 Wagon axles the same as the 83-86?

that's correct. all of the wagons, both FWD and 4wd, from 83-88 share the same cv axles. additionally, all hatchbacks from 83-86 share these axles.

this applies to both manual and automatic transmissions.

That's good to know. Parts people in NZ are hesitant to say they have the correct part, as no one over here knows much about the 4wd vehicles/wagons. A place in ozey seems sure they have the correct part, and the pricing is quite reasonable, so will likely buy them from there.

I was wondering why they were all sold as a complete axle, so you cannot just change the outer CV? Interesting.

Once again, thank you for all your help.

Cheers, Thomas.
