if that valve is bad it will act like a vacuum leak, which you found out. not sure if anything bad will happen to drive it with it disabled and blocked off, I think it controls the flap that regulates in coming air temp into the air cleaner assembly. I disabled mine to see if it improved fuel economy (colder air is more dense, should be more efficient), but I have not noticed any difference. Make sure the butterfly valve in the air cleaner intake is in the "cold" fully open position so it takes air from next to the head light through the flex duct and not from the exhaust manifold heat shield.

Yeah, I am leaning towards plugging and forgetting it. Seems to simply go to the pre-heater hose flap in the front of the cleaner as you say--I'll close that flap.

B&R (in Chehalis) wants to charge $25 to throw a $25 air cleaner assembly on the truck--that probably already makes the I-5 journey bi-weekly--and bring it down here to Eugene.

I will also check the torque on the manifold bolts like you mentioned too.

IF you did that, you can remove the hose going from the air filter to the intake manifold heat shield, as you won't need it anymore.
