What's a 4.1 third member worth?

Post by irowiki »

There's an 1985 Tercel in Boulder CO that has stranded someone on a road trip from Oregon, they say the rear is seized, probably a bearing?

Edit: AHA! It is shambug's car!

I'm thinking of taking the third member off of Snap, 1987 and driving up and selling/trading it for the bad one, so they can be on their way.

What would you consider a good third member to be worth in trade for a "bad" one, or do you think it is an easy fix?

Or would it be just the axle, and not needing the whole third member?

They say they have a bearing on order and might drive down here for other parts (they think they might need a diff) if they need it. I want to help them out, especially since they're considering bicycling home.

60.00 is what i paid for one ten years ago from a used parts place
"seized" sounds bad
if it turns out to be an axle bearing hopefully the rear axle housing is not too messed up
if the diff is shot that might create a mess too

good luck
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

I just paid 100 for one at pick&pull and almost another 100 for two axles with bearings.
I have a 4.1 rear diff and axles in my yard.

If you help these guys out the job is easy enough take both entire axles and third member.
You need to remove the axles anyway replace all of it from snap to the other car just to be safe.
If they want to wash there hands of the entire car and it's safe where it is i will send the money for there bikes  until i can make time to go fix it and drive home.

He said he's replacing the bearing right now and will see how the car runs. They might drive down to NM to get my diff if the diff they have is still bad.

I figured all you'd need to do is take off the wheels, disconnect the drive shaft, and the shocks, and the whole third member would come off in one piece? Or am I crazy?

Shocks stay on :!:
Remove wheels and drums
Remove driveline
4 bolt's(each side) where the axle's attach to axle housing (behind the brake pads)
Don't remove the pads you can get to the bolts through the holes in the axle between the wheel lugs.
Pop out axles and remove third member

The axles only need to come out a few inches to free the third member. Do not disconnect the shocks.

Wait, I thought the third member was the entire thing in the back, the diff casing, and the axle casings?

No the third member is just the gear cluster in the center of the entire rear axle.
The cluster is a seprate and removable part from the " whole thing"

be very careful when you pull the axles to replace the diff 3rd member, you want to keep the wheel bearing seals in good condition. when I do this I just slip the axle out about 3 inches and hang the end with a bungy cord so it does not rest on the axle seal in the end of the housing.

A diff/3rd member from Picknpull is about $100. If you have removed already $125-150 would seem a reasonable price for your effort. make sure there is not too much play between the ring and pinion gears (called lash) or it might have to be reset, that costs about $200 by a skilled diff specialist (they use shims in the sides and pinion bearing seat).

did an online search and couldn't find anything out there for a 4.1 ratio third member...

but I did find one for a 3.73 ratio (fits 1983-84 T4WD wagon), on eBay, for $100 plus shipping, in Port Angeles, WA
they call it a "carrier assembly" which I think is the same thing as a third member
