Starters

Post by irowiki »

Looking for 1-2 starters in working condition for use as spares. I'm assuming they can go into an "if it fits it ships" box so it isn't quite as expensive to ship.

I'm going to try replacing the solenoid on one of my bad starters since a new one was just $10, so I might just need one starter.

What about just replacing the copper contacts? That's all I've ever had to do, e.g. http://www.dormanproducts.com/p-1049-02349.aspx

Alright, I'll see if I can find a specific set for the second gen tercels, unless the linked one works? (it says 90 and up)

Yes, I have used the above pictured one to rebuild the solenoid on one of my starters. It is a generic kit for Nippondenso solenoids. You will notice that the kit comes with many different shapes. A starter/alternator rebuild shop (or auto parts store) will have these contacts on hand. You may be able to buy just the two you need, or you may have to buy a kit like in the picture above. About 15 years ago, the rebuild shops were buying the single contacts for $0.50 each and selling for $8. Today that kit pictured above goes for closer to $30 in my area.

Those different shaped contacts are used depending on what side of the solenoid that the power cable goes in and comes out of (any of the 4 flat sides). I think I used the two straightest looking ones last time.

Search for "nippondenso starter repair" or similar. There seem to be many videos on it, e.g.: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWm8j1SkUD8 In this video, the kit comes with the circular disc, but I have not seen that part being replaced before. I just clean up the center disc with sandpaper or a file or something.

Good luck. Like rer233 says, it's not too hard to do.
