Leaks

Post by nessanater »

So I cleaned things off a bit to see where I have leaks, and I have a list, and need advice.
Oil on top of charcoal canister. No clue.
Fuel behind carb.
Oil all over vacuum advance, but not distributor. Is there oil involved with that?
Clutch cable sleeve/boot is broken, and there is oil all over it, but I'm not sure if it's from the cable or from something above it. There's alot of oil leaking around that whole area, it may be the valve cover is bad back there, or the vacuum advance has oil leaking from it somehow, or if there is oil in the clutch cable, then it's shooting out. I don't know.
The 2 rubber hoses labeled "fuel" that are top center, in the back of the engine compartment, are kinda crusty on the outside. None of my other rubber hoses are like that, so it's not road grime, it is dry and scrapes off kinda like dried tree sap.
The space between the master cylinder and the brake fluid reservoir, where I'm guessing there's a grommet, seems to be damp with fluid, I only cleaned it and checked after a day because the master cylinder seemed to have goo that was not oil on it, and it didn't seem like oil would be able to get up there anyway. Brake fluid is not low though, but I may have topped it off 6 or 8 months ago.

So yeah, that's my list. I only have a couple of pictures, of the fuel thing and the charcoal canister lid. What's my priority here, and/or are any of these things major concerns?

most common source of oil leaks in descending order: valve cover gasket (including the rubber half-moon plug in the back), distributor 0-ring, front seals (both cam and crankshaft), fuel pump gasket, and oil pressure sender (behind the alternator/airconditioner compressor).

the oil is likely leaking from either the valve cover or distributor base onto the clutch cable. the clutch cable has no motor oil in it. Replace the valve cover gasket first, put degreaser on the engine and hose it all off, and than watch for new leaks.

The secondary barrel on the carb is controlled by a vacuum diaphragm that sometimes dribbles fuel onto the heat shield under the carb and causes oily looking stains. not really a problem, mine has leaked for years, I should get around to replacing it someday.
