mark, i know a few people who do that with big purchases: ski boats, tires, high end guitars, horse trailers, etc. i'm not sure how it works but i believe with those big purchases, you usually have to pay canadian tax on them when you bring them back across the border, sort of like a "you can shop elsewhere if you want but we will still get our cut" tactic which obviously eats into the savings. i should ask my friends about their experiences with it.

i usually prefer to just keep buying good, cheap, used crap around here and forgo all that headache.

so if you spend a week in the US and buy an $8000 item, you have to pay taxes on the remaining $7200?

My 2nd cousin that lives in Vancouver BC wanted a cheap utility trailer, they were not very cheap in Canada, even for a rusty old beater. I bought a decent used one down here in WA state for him for about $600 as I recall (it was about 25 years ago), I drove it across the boarder. They asked at the boarder what the trailer was for, I said I was going to help my cousin that lives in North Vancouver move some stuff (I was pulling it with my pick-up truck). he sanded blasted it and put fresh paint and tires on it, new tail lights and than told them that he built it himself to save the import tax (which must have had a much lower exemption than). he seemed to think it saved him a lot of money.
