Need a fuel tank for 84 4x4 Wagon
Hey Chris. Where do you live? I'm in Colorado. I MIGHT be able to sell you my 84's tank. Its the same as the other years though, my 84 is running an 86 tank right now. Thought I had fuel supply issues, but in fact my dist was screwy. Only problem with the 84 tank is that it has a deposit layer on the inside. Sat for a few with stale gas in it. Don't think there is a rust issue.
If the fumes leak in under movement..... Check for oil spray on the firewall. It might indicate a bad fuel pump. Back when my 86 was first bought, it had a bad fuel pump and it caused fuel fumes to get into the cab. And hesitation.
Also check for a faulty gasket on the sender unit. Can be checked by undoing the 3 screws on that panel in the back under the carpet then undoing the screws on the sending unit undernieth it.
Does fuel pool up undernieth the car when parked?
If so, not only check the taank itself for leaks, but check the rubber hoses that go from the tank to the hardlines on the car for holes or rot. Check the hardlines for rusting through, or puncture holes. Samegoes for the tank.
Keep in mind, the straps are a PAIN to get back on. I'd suggest doing it by removing the forward(reletive to entire car) supports bolts. This will drop it down. It will also make it possible to just CAREFULLY cinch the tank back up. CAREFULLY.
